bill introduced to the US House of Representatives would require ISPs to record all users' surfing activity, IM conversations and email traffic indefinitely.

The bill, dubbed the Safety Act by sponsor Lamar Smith, a republican congressman from Texas, would impose fines and a prison term of one year on ISPs which failed to keep full records....

One fairy easy method is a browser called TOR Park Browser.

It directs the user through other ISPs, usually in Europe. It is slow, but if you need some private surfing, it will work.

>>>Why there isn't a revolt...

Why the grumpy disposition? Didn't they tell you that the government is giving away FREE STUFF? Get some of it for yourself, and never mind if there are a few strings attached.

Thanks but wouldn't your current ISP just see you going out to another ISP?

If Hillary proposed this, there would be fierce opposition. If Rudy proposed it, some moonbats would whine, but the Republicans would roll over.

Big brother government is loved by both of the major parties.

Amen.

Both parties will continue to destroy Liberty as long as we allow them to cow us with threats of Emmanuel Goldstein Bin Ladin or Child Porn.

This guy is an idiot who doesn't understand technology. This law would be enforceable only in the United States. From my PC here in Kansas, I could set up a Secure Shell tunnel to a PC outside the USA and run chat, etc from there. I'd not be violating the law, nor would the ISP, because as far as the ISP is concerned, I am not chatting!

"he sure doesn't act like a Republican"

This sounds like a Dem stunt. This guy must be a Dem who ran as a Rep to get elected.

It's not a joke. Smith has a history of introducing BS technology legislation.

So which parts are you against having read it?

Part 1: The delusional belief that the United States Constitution can be amended by simple legislation:

Elimination of Requirement of an Interstate or Foreign Communication for Certain Offenses...

Part 2: The massive unfunded mandage (as several posters noted, Mr. Smith needs to be financially anal-probed to uncover his connections to the data-storage industry):

Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this section, the Attorney General shall issue regulations governing the retention of records by Internet Service Providers. Such regulations shall, at a minimum, require retention of records, such as the name and address of the subscriber or registered user to whom an Internet Protocol address, user identification or telephone number was assigned, in order to permit compliance with court orders that may require production of such information.

Oh, screw it. Let's just say that the entire thing is unacceptable, and that the party needs to censure Mr. Smith.
