bill introduced to the US House of Representatives would require ISPs to record all users' surfing activity, IM conversations and email traffic indefinitely.
The bill, dubbed the Safety Act by sponsor Lamar Smith, a republican congressman from Texas, would impose fines and a prison term of one year on ISPs which failed to keep full records....

Here's an idea: recast this bill for the MSM. "No more Internet at Starbucks! If this bill is passed, Starbucks could no longer offer Internet because they would have to pay $150,000 every time someone abused their service."

It's not. And they don't.
The Digital Telephony Act of 1994's requires the phone companies to provide law enforcement officials with assurance that they will be able to "tap" or have access to the content of any communications incorporating new digital technology in the same way that traditional voice transmissions are currently accessible.
The phone companies do not record all telephone conversations.
If they implement such BS regulations on ISPs I will use those services even when I 'have nothing to hide' just to make the intel analysts waste their time breaking the encryption to see my worthless internet traffic. I'm sure encrypted tunnels and proxy's will be regulated as well. I'd expect they will require some sort of license or permit to use them and make them so cost prohibitive only a business or a wealthy individual would own one.
I have a better suggestion: Require the government to track and publish the web surfing of all members of congress. Publish these on line.
Imagine the expense of maintaining all those records just so the Gov't could sift through them scanning for crimes. (shudder)

You didn't ask me, but I'm against the horrendous RICO portion, just for starters. RICO and "money laundering"--first refuges of statist scoundrels.
And a huge portion of those storage costs are going to go to Oracle.

They don't need to sift through all of them -- just the ones pertaining to those who annoy the people in power....
The "safety" act??? Surely they can come up with something more imaginitive than that -- it's as if they're not even trying anymore!
I wonder how long it will be until we have a "Safety Czar?" A free country can't have too many Czars...
I light of this new law I'd like to clarify that I in no way endorse armed revolt.
Now as to why there won't be one, we are outgunned. Even the local Barney Fife has access to full auto 7 body armor, the most we can get is a semi auto rifle, handgun or shotgun. The 2A has been effectively neutralized and there is no longer a reset button. You are living in a socialist country which is moving toward fascism.
