Poll Favors Giuliani In New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. - New Hampshire residents likely to vote in the Republican presidential primary a year from now think more highly of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani than any of his rivals, a poll released Tuesday shows.

Giuliani's net favorability rating — the proportion of people viewing him favorably minus the proportion viewing him unfavorably — was 56 percent, well ahead of Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), 32 percent, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 26 percent, in the University of New Hampshire poll for WMUR-TV in Manchester.

"He's the lesser-known candidate, but he has that rock star quality," poll director Andy Smith said of Giuliani. "He has a charisma that was built after 9-11."

This long before an election, political professionals pay more attention to favorability than voters' choices if they had to vote today. McCain and Giuliani were essentially tied at about 27 percent on that question among likely GOP primary voters, followed by Romney at 13 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 9 percent.

The GOP portion of the telephone poll reached 311 likely voters from Thursday to Monday and had an error margin of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points.

Former Sen. John Edwards and Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) had net favorability ratings ranging from 61 percent to 55 percent, too close to be statistically significant.

When asked for whom they would vote, 35 percent of likely Democratic voters picked Clinton, 21 percent Obama and 15 percent Edwards. Eight percent chose former Vice President Al Gore, who is not running.

The Democratic portion of the phone poll reached 353 likely voters and had an error margin of plus or minus 5.2 percentage points.

Independents may vote in either primary, and 68 percent of them indicated they planned to vote in the Democratic primary compared to 32 percent leaning toward the GOP contest.

"This will hurt Republican candidates who try to appeal to more moderate, independent voters," Smith said.

You are right. There is a small element of Evangelicals (the Rick Warren crowd) are enamored with Obama. They are stupid in more ways than one.

well if both candidates are, then one obviously has to. =P

Unless, of course, Rudy causes the GOP to split.

It's a great tactic for Giulani-bashers, like you, to resort to name-calling rhetoric

Just what was factually incorrect about the post? A star athelete once said it ain't bragging if you can do it.

Likewise, it ain't bashing if it's true.

It shocks me how many people here think FR is a microcosm of overall society or even the conservative movement..it is amazing how many people here think it is 1980.

The CENTRAL tenet of Socialism and Communism is government control of the means of production.

What from Rudy's tenure as mayor would indicate he's in favor of government control of the means of production?

.....often it is the conservative movement that is "the stupid movement"....

ROTFLMSO----precisely what the Rudeniks are counting on.

As Borat indicated to Rolling Stone, "You can tell those dumb Christians anything, and they'll believe it."

Duh.

I hope the Rudeniks have Plan B in place when the "Dumb Plan" doesn't work out.

This jerk Rudy should run for president----of Kazakhstan. He can announce his candidacy on Da Ali G Show.

LOL.

I'd remind you that if New York City was a state, it would be the 11th most populous state in the country.

And about 12 times the population of Duncan Hunter's Congressional district.

"It's a great tactic for Giulani-bashers, like you, to resort to name-calling rhetoric rather than promote the good qualities of the candidate you support. You're not winning the hearts and minds of Rudy supporters."

There is a two way street, Rudder. That same statement applies for the other side as well.

Here is one for starters……

It just seems as if a candidate would have to poll 100% in order to satisfy the "all" modifier in your criterium. There is no candidate that will satisfy an individual's criteria 100%. There are no single issue candidates any longer. We prioritize issues and wank the choices according to how they stack up against the #1 on your list.

Number 1 on my list is the WOT. In that case, Rudy is my first choice. Newt is second; not based on any performance in the WOT, but based on the view that he is the more conservative of the two names. It is not a simple equation.

And it would lead all 51 states in abortions!

I have a feeling that those supporting this RINO are either part of his campaign, or are Democrats trying to demoralize real Republicans.

Such as the leaders of The Citadel that invited Rudy to give their commencement address this year?

Rudy is as much a member of the Republican Party as anyone on this forum -- more than most, in fact, since he has served in appointed and elective office as a Republican. If you want to say that he isn't a Conservative, that's sensible; to claim he is not a Republican is utter nonsense.

Not all Republican officials or supporters are aligned with conservatives; nor will they ever be.

At least one poster on this thread said they would prefer Obama to Rudy. Others will stay home if Rudy is the nominee or vote for a third party quixote for the same reasons Perot received votes ("we sure taught GHWB a lesson!! Same with Ford in 1976!). I would nominate such people as RINOS, because they will only support Republican candidates who fit their narrow views of acceptability.

Such attitudes are responsible for alientating former Republican voters in states outside of the South. Bad strategery unless one believes having Nancy and Hillary as joint Queens of this country somehow advances social conservatism.

True or not, it adds nothing to enhance your point of view. Let me put it another way: If you think that exposing all the nasty things you perceive in Giuliani will convince his supporters to rethink their position, you're wrong. But this is not just directed at just you. On virtually all the Rudy threads, his detractors get on and bad mouth him, missing the opportunity to boost their candidates' good qualities. But I guess they feel better venting their spleens.

And once again, no mayor has ever been elected president.

NYC's electorate is hardly representative of the larger country.

Gawd, that's rich.

My point of view is that Rudy will not be able to hold the base. The fact I cited strongly supports such.

Give it up. All your side has left is money, spin and bullsh**. The sad thing is, that just might be enough for Rudy to win the nomination and sink the GOP.
