LANDIS - A pregnant woman and the baby she was carrying died Tuesday night after a head-on collision with a Jeep driven by a man Kannapolis police were following at the intersection of South Main Street and West First Street.
Another infant child in the car did not appear injured, officials said
Officials did not release their names. They said the woman was eight months pregnant.
Reed Linn, Landis Volunteer Fire Department chief, said the wreck occurred about 5:15 p.m.
Linn said that after the wreck, the man was pinned underneath the Jeep. Emergency service workers had to use two airbag devices to lift the vehicle off the man.
Linn said the woman was pinned in her car and responders had to cut away the doors and roof to get her out. The infant child was in a seat and was not pinned, Linn said.
Landis Police Chief Reggie Faggart said the man driving the Jeep was traveling north on South Main Street at about 70 to 80 mph, with the woman headed south. The speed limit in the area is posted at 35 mph.
As of 9 p.m., police were still trying to learn the identity of the woman in the wreck, Faggart said.
The wreck occurred after a Kannapolis Police Department officer followed the driver of the red Jeep, Kannapolis Police Maj. Woody Chavis said.
He said the officer did not actually chase the driver, but began following him after a woman told the officer she saw the Jeep hit two vehicles in Kannapolis and keep driving.
Karen Page, 35, of Kannapolis, said she saw the vehicle go by and called 911. She said she also talked to an officer.
"I saw him hit two cars at first," she said. "And I followed him trying to get his license plate number."
Tommy Wilbanks, 24, of Kannapolis, said he was driving south on Main Street just in front of the pregnant woman. Wilbanks said he saw the wreck.
He said he watched the Jeep hit the white Saturn and fly into the air.
"He went up in the air and did about three or four flips," Wilbanks said.
He said he got out of his vehicle and went to help the woman.
"I tried to talk to her and told her everything's going to be OK," Wilbanks said. "All I could do was talk to her."
The names of the victims were not released and hospitals will not release patient information without a name.
That's practically the only reason the story gets posted here.
I wonder why they call him Rigo Verto. There's no such names . . . my bet is his name is Rigoberto.
Most likely, the Cop will be charged, not the felon.
Just Damn!!!!!!!!!
Call it what you wish, but I call it a damned invasion of our sovereignty by illegal invaders that cannot and will not pay their own way and end up killing too many innocent Americans.
The "racism" part was sarcasm, as I'm well aware that being Mexican has nothing to do with "race", except for those that choose to make it such, such as the "guest worker" apologists on this forum.
Yeah, I'm a bigot.
Proud of it, too.
I will never accept illegal invaders as a routine part of the way we do business in America.
And yes, I'm well aware of the fact that legal immigrants and citizens have accidents and drive drunk too, but they normally are properly licensed, insured and capable of understanding the consequences of their actions, since they are legal!
There is no recourse for the victim to take against the illegal invaders.
Even if they are convicted for their crimes, they get deported immediately, then return for more forays and there is no civil justice with them as they have no assets, being "illegal", as they are.
But I digess, having sunk to the level of "bigot".
Perhaps I should gather a few maggot-infested hippies, get out the old guitar and sit around the fire on the beach, chanting kum-bah-yah, m'lord and moaning about the plight of the poor brown-skinned bracero.
Yeah, sure.
I'll just remain a bigot.
Complaining about our Administration's failed immigration policy is just window-dressing.
Prayers...
Maybe we should just quit reporting all crimes committed by illegal alien. Would that make you happy?
Exactly who is charged with, and sworn to protect the borders of this country?
As I said before...
You have a nice day.
A lot of local people are injured or their cars damaged by illegal aliens driving without insurance, and usually without valid licenses. In NC, it is easy for illegals to get drivers licenses, but many don't bother - despite the fact there is a full-time Spanish speaker on the DMV staff to help them fill out forms and take the tests.
The other day, I came within a whisker of getting hit head-on by one of these illegal aliens who was driving out of control. Don't ask me "how" I know it was an illegal. I know. They are obvious by the way they drive, the cars they are driving, and their demeanor.
Americans continue under this daily assault by illegals and the deadly problem is blithely ignored by most of our politicians and usually our law enforcement. They can't do anything about them, so they just don't bother.
umm . . . our Administration? What do I win?
Another illegal gets drunk, drives, and kills. It's a common story.
As long as they are only killing us common folk, the politicians aren't going to care.
Certainly. In Southwest states, and larger urban areas in the NE, many Hispanics are legal residents.
Their legality gets less likely in places like Kannapolis, NC and Gainesville, GA. Add in the fact that most legal residents would probably have a valid DL, and any thinking person would be justified in concluding that the perp in this case is illegal. Hardly bigotry; just logic, augmented by experience.
I would immediately say he was an illegal invader [based on his surname], however, the illegal invader apologists (read: liberal RINO pacifist cowards) around here would just accuse me of racism. [emphasis added]Experience? Maybe, if a knee-jerk reaction qualifies. Logic? No. Bigotry? See above.
Well, then I'm a bigot as well, because whenever I hear of a fatal/injury crash in my area (N. GA), especially one that involves hit-and-run, I immediately think "illegal."
I don't even bother to wait for the "Hispanic surname."
And I'm usually proven right. I guess I'm a super-bigot.
When enough family members of the politicians start getting killed by these illegals something will be done.Until then be extra careful when you drive.
Operative word being, "usually." Presumably then, when you are wrong, you ignore it and continue to refer to the process as logical.
I don't ignore it. I consider it logical that I have noticed a preponderence of fatal auto accidents in my area, which has a large population of illegals, are caused by illegals. Certainly not all of them, but a number which seems far out of proportion with the rest of the population.
What would be illogical is assuming that the news media in my area is distorting the truth or misidentifying the status of drivers at fault in these incidents, leading me to a fallacious conclusion.
I, surprisingly enough to me, am not alone in that observation, as evidenced by the posts of others on threads such as these.
If you have not noticed such a phenomenon in your locale, consider yourself lucky.
