Sacramento -- Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, arguing that America is in desperate need of a Ronald Reagan-style optimistic vision, told California Republicans on Saturday that he wants to be a president who will "win the world for a set of ideas ... that I believe come from God."
"We're for freedom, we're for the future, and in order to do that, we need leadership that uplifts us and moves us toward the future," Giuliani told the lunchtime crowd at the state GOP convention, all but formally declaring his candidacy for his party's presidential nomination. "You get to decide who that leader is going to be -- and I wish you'd decide on me."
Asked by reporters afterward when he would make a formal announcement of his 2008 presidential campaign, Giuliani joked, "If you listened to my speech, I may have announced it."
Giuliani, who last Monday filed a declaration of candidacy, is considered one of the early favorites in the GOP 2008 presidential contest with Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Giuliani's sold-out, $60-a-head lunch before 800 California Republicans -- with at least another 100 in overflow rooms -- was a hot ticket at the semi-annual GOP gathering at the Hyatt Hotel.
Giuliani's audience was primed for a lovefest: Excited Republicans in the hall jumped to their feet and cheered when scores of young volunteers waving "I (heart) Rudy" signs marched through the room, where the man introduced as "America's mayor" took the stage to the sound of the Clash tune "Rudie Can't Fail."

Good post, keep it up, but I will tell you something about Rudy, he is a force.
As a man I keep feeling the draw towards Rudy.
Every time I look at where he is on my most important three issues, I say no way.
I don't have to explain why I don't support Mc Cain, and while Romney looks good today, we have been down that road (he is George Bush, without the rock like devotion to his post 9/11 strategic views, and inner historical views.
There is a reason Guiliani is in play, many of us can't bring ourselves to overcome that he is a natural force.
If you think the man doesn't matter, that only his positions are important, then look closer at the major figures of American history, such as T. Roosevelt, or Franklin Roosevelt, or Reagan.
I agree. But have to add one further point. Don't touch my:
Newt could beat The Beast. First he'd show her for what a shrill shrew she is. Then prove that she's a lying, scheming, socialist bitch.
There's so much mention of Obama's declaration that he is running for president, and relatively little that Giuliani (spelling?) has done the same.

I have no information that disagrees with that, for republicans, this is going to be a very difficult primary.
Interesting article.
Rudy is an RR (Real Reagan) leader! :)
"We're for freedom"
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Damn straight we are, beginning with the 2nd amendment!
Agreed. That does trouble me. All candidates are imperfect, and I have to wonder, which would be worse for Second Amendment rights, Giuliani or Hillary/Obama?
Once again, you're incorrect. I didn't say he was on the same page as the Democrats. You can look up exactly what I said, and you can look at the results. Saying the Democrats controlled the House has zero to do with what I said (you're merely making an excuse, though a legit one, for his failure); partisan attacks come from all sides at all times, and has zero to do with what I said (Republicans aren't always attacked from all sides at all times? And what's that got to do with the comment I made?).
You aren't even paying attention to my point, so really, I can't take your upbraiding me seriously at all. The difference between what I wrote and what you decided to make it mean so you can come off as someone defending Reagan is so large that there's no point in continuing on.
I love RWR, but the deficit shrunk because the Republican congress that came to power long after Reagan's presidency limited spending. The economic expansion was due to Reagan's setting the stage, for which he deserves great credit. But if we're honest with ourselves, we have to cop to the deficit ballooning under Reagan and can't just say "Well it shrunk eventually so he was right!" when he was claiming that it would shrink long before it did.
This isn't stating that this is definitively the case, but that skeptics could have this idea or view.
Also his decision to declare his candidacy in California. With California and New York (two very populous blue states) voting for him (California still a long shot), he might be able to weather a few of the more conservative red states not voting for him.
"Giuliani, arguing that America is in desperate need of a Ronald Reagan-style optimistic vision..."
Sounds like Julie-Annie is endorsing Duncan Hunter.
"Rudy is an RR (Real Reagan) leader!"
LOL
"...which would be worse for Second Amendment rights, Giuliani or Hillary/Obama?"
Better sell your guns now. If either of them get elected, the 2nd will go to the shredder. Duncan Hunter is pro-gun, big time. He's your man, Darkwolf377.
You are not worthy of using (R-Reagan) in any speech RG!
SHAME ON YOU!
I'm not buying this crap. Are you?
/Salute
"You are not worthy of using (R-Reagan) in any speech RG!"
Ain't that the truth! What a joke for Julie-Annie to try and pass himself off as the next Ronald Reagan.
"You get to decide who that leader is going to be -- and I wish you'd decide on me."
And I WISH I had a pony.
Unfortunately I'll never get that pony, but fortunately Rudy, you'll never get the nomination.
