Do Vanity Candidates Really Have a Chance? (Michael Medved)

Two days ago, in blogging about the abortion records of the serious GOP Presidential prospects (McCain, Giuliani, Romney), I provoked a great deal of anger by writing off the other current contenders (Huckabee, Brownback, Tancredo, Ron Paul, Gilmore, Thompson, Duncan Hunter) as "lesser" candidates who stand no realistic chance of winning primaries or grabbing the nomination. No matter how much you may admire these people, their candidacies are irrelevant more a bid for attention, or a preparation for future races, than a realistic bid for power...
When, in the last 60 years of Presidential politics, did any obscure underdog manage to defy the odds and win the nomination of the Republican Party?...

The man is giving a few days to Rudy, and one to select other candidates, and none to candidates he feels are vanity candidates.
Gee, I wonder who Medved supports? LOL
Make no mistake about it, MM will be among the many in the GOP media who would pop the cork tomorrow and celebrate the death of Social Conservatism in politics. Pretty much all of the GOP media are Social Libertarians.

The Federalists sorta morphed into the Whigs (National Republicans), the Jeffersonian Republicans became the Jacksonian Democrats, and the Republicans came about as the Whigs broke up over slavery. The Republicans were free-soilers who had both former Whigs (Lincoln) and Democrats who could not buy the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

"So if you agree with Hunter, why is it necessary to put him down?"
It's not necessary, it's just my warped sense of humor. There are some here who crack me up with their view that they have a veto, rather than a vote. I love it when they do the "I won't vote for (fill-in-the blank) if Osama Bin Laden is the other candidate!"
I'll try to be nice, really. It's just hard to take this stuff seriously at this point in the "campaign season."

Here in my district we elected conservative Tim Walberg over Joe Schwarz even after he (Schwarz) got the endorsement of the president, John McCain, AND the democrats. (Democrats were encouraged to vote for him in the primary)

Those that think they are the "true" conservatives had better figure out that they comprise about 1/5 of the electorate. They better enlarge the tent, unless they like being powerless.

He discussed this with Boortz the other day. It's called a "virtual primary" - a primary that takes place on the Internet, talk shows, and the MSM in general.

Free Republic Poll
Newt Gingrich 28.0% 2,306
Duncan Hunter 21.4% 1,762
Rudy Giuliani 15.8% 1,299
Tom Tancredo 11.6% 959
Mitt Romney 7.7% 635
Undecided/pass 6.8% 559
Ron Paul 6.4% 523
John McCain 2.3% 190
There are more people in Duncan Hunter's dist. that voted for him than are the population of many of your cities.
He must be ahead of your guy to be ripping on him with out dealing with issues.

Weird, because I always found Medved, historically, to support social conservatism at the EXPENSE of other parts of the conservative agenda - supporting Rudy is the exact opposite of what I'd expect him to do.
