Cuyahoga Co. To Allow Organ Harvest Before Brain Death (Ohio)
News Net 5 (Cleveland) ^ | February 10, 2007 | not specified

CLEVELAND -- Prosecutors in Ohio's most populous county said they'll no longer block the local organ bank if it wants to remove organs from people who are not yet brain dead.

Most organs are removed for donation only after the brain ceases all activity. But nationwide there has been growing use a more complicated procedure to remove the organs after the heart stops working.

Three such donations were done in Akron last year.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors for the past decade have clashed with the LifeBanc over removing organs after cardiac death. At one point they threatened homicide charges.

But Prosecutor Bill Mason has written a legal opinion endorsing a revised procedure that does not include use of a blood thinning drug that prosecutors believed would hasten death.

I do think it is strange that the AMA understands financial incentive so well for those doing the transplant but opposes even small payments to the donor's family.

Your mistake is that you believe the AMA represents Physicians...and in reality they do not. Less than 40% of physicians belong to the AMA and I would wager that the vast majority of those are primary care physicians.

The AMA is a hack left-wing organization and I want nothing to do with them, and most Doctors feel the same.

Wow, I have never heard that sentiment before. I apologize for equating the medical profession with the AMA.

Well, after all, that county was one of the primary counties electing Dennis Kucinich; he is obviously brain dead. Harvest HIS organs but don't bother with the brain unless you want to put it in a hamster.

Gives a whole new perspective to 2 Peter 2:3a:

And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:

While I am not certain, I believe this link that discusses the issue and the 'agreement' between the organ procurement organization and the prosecutor's office for Cuyahoga County may give everyone more information than the 5 sentence 'article' that was posted.

At least the comments/opinions would be more appropriately based on accurate information, and not a brief, poorly worded TV news piece:

Tony Bennett needs to update the song (substitute Cuyahoga for San Francisco)

Not sure what your tag line means or refers to (but I think I agree with it)...

What about people who are suicidal?

Sorry about the previous post; didn't realize you were asking me a question. Was just thinking that the way we as a society are going, we are apt to start harvesting organs from people to evidence signs of clinical depression, since they are suicidal (and are probably going to kill themselves anyway) - why wait?

Still with tongue firmly planted in cheek... (in Sarcasm).

Why is it any different for you to want to prolong your life by keeping your organs as it is for somebody else to want to prolong his or her life by taking your organs?

God gave you your organs, and he also gave many of us generous, caring hearts. I would be happy to be an organ donor again, but I don't trust the medical industry to do right by me, so the answer is no. Those in need of my organs should take it up my rescinded generosity with the medical industry.

I can take them to the grave with me, which is where they will go and where they belong, in my opinion.

They're yours to do with as you please. The state or "society" does not own anybody, though they seem to want to change that here.

I always remember that line from "The Man with Two Brains."

"But all these people are dying so you can continue your experiments!"
"If it saves one life, it will be worth it!"

Sometimes I wonder if the medical powers who see "Organ Donor" on your drivers license will make them less likely to save you in the event you get in a wreck? It's something to ponder....
