WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Feb. 9, 2007) - The White House announced today that President Bush will present the Medal of Honor to Bruce P. Crandall in recognition of his actions at Landing Zone X-Ray during the Battle of Ia Drang, Vietnam, in November 1965.

I served 2 years + 2 days in 1951-52. Nothing was ever said about "earning" a Good Conduct Medal. Somewhere I got the idea that 3 years service was required to get one. Actually I never got a discharge either, just a DD214. I suspect they may have me marked up AWOL from the inactive reserve, for which we were theoretically hooked for 5 years after discharge.

But at least he is going to get it and from the right President, a President that he be proud of receving it from.
Check out para 4-5. I believe you'd qualify. As for your discharge, don't quote me, but I believe your DD Form 214 has all necessary info for you to apply.

Great news, and well deserved. IMHO, every combat guy deserves more recognition than we can give, and when an exceptional man gets exceptional recognition, it speaks to the worthiness off all involved.
