Vietnam déjà vu
There's an effort under way by liberal revisionists to rewrite history about the anti-war left's horrible treatment of Vietnam veterans, just as they prepare to besmirch the good efforts of veterans in the war on terrorism.
The groundwork for these shenanigans was laid by associate professor Jerry Lembcke of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and his book, "Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam."
Lembcke, who was an active member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, claims that Vietnam veterans lied about the treatment they received, and that it was in fact war supporters who were disrespectful toward veterans for failing to do a better job prosecuting the war.
This is the most absurd and disingenuous propaganda to come from the radical left in quite some time, but what is most disturbing is to see how such misinformation is being used as a tool by anti-war liberals to undermine public support for the war on terrorism.
MSNBC's liberal chieftain, Keith Olbermann, advanced Lembcke's attempts at revisionist history last week, making the following declaration on the Feb. 1, 2007, broadcast of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann":
And, oh, by the way, there is not one confirmed case, not one, of Americans spitting on veterans returning from Vietnam.
Olbermann and Lembcke are either deliberately lying, or they're not making much of an effort at all to find the truth.

I shoulda gotten the names of all those fine people spittin in my general direction then..
In 1974 I wasn't even IN the US Military but I WAS in my High School's Junior ROTC program. I went to Cass Technical High School in downtown Detroit. One morning after traveling by bus from home to school, I had to walk through a crowd of people protesting something to get to school.
I was attacked. Hit, spit at, and had paint thrown at me in plastic baggies of some sort. I was called a "baby killer" and shoved into the street, by a bunch of "college kids".
I was in an Army uniform, with the rank of "SSG" -- in Jr. ROTC. And the bastards spit on ME.
So they are lying sacks of S--t.
I was in HIGH SCHOOL for goodness sakes. I wasn't even IN the Military yet.
Talk about revisionism!!
They still haven't cleared up that Seinfeld-Costanza-Keith Hernandez "second spitter" incident.
Hopefully my cohorts at Move America Forward will be doing something to help out in this effort in some regard.
Sorry to read that account of what you had to go through. I can't fathom why the Keith Olbermann's and Jerry Lembcke's would want to accuse Vietnam Vets of being liars about this. What do they hope to gain except trying to cause more pain for these Vets to think back about how they were treated and then be told that NO - they are LIARS!
I think they're saying that hippies and anti-war protestors were more likely to be spat on by "hardhats," not that war supporters attacked the troops, but still it looks like they credit anecdotal evidence and recollections when it suits their purpose and disregard it when it doesn't.
DATE OF BIRTH: June 26, 1943
My guess this POS was out there protesting and spitting--he w/b the right age. Now as he is aging he is trying to mentally assuage his guilt.
This whole thing will P!ss me off more than my bp medication can handle.
I wanna meet this jacka$$ in person.....
Deep breath, deep breath.....
Good post.
"That's some loogey!"
LOL - This was actually the very thing I was thinking of!
I do too as I saw it first hand when my brother came home from Vietnam in 1973. To bad I was only 13 years old or else I woulda whupped thier a$$es.
Look at a 19 year old now and start screaming obscenities at him for attending the wrong college. Get his own generation to mock him and throw feces and urine at him for making the wrong decision. Get the media to focus on 1% of his classmates who did illegal things. Then have his family and former friends ignore him because of the social stigma. Then have his loving girlfriend or wife leave him, because it just wasn't "groovy" to hang around a guy like that. Add Isolation, drug addiction, self hate and the fear to fit back into such a society, and you get a picture of what Vietnam Veterans, who were happy to come home alive, had to deal with barely out of their teens.

We NEVER wore our uniforms when on leave except when traveling ... for just this reason. I got back from Vietnam with two weeks left in service. I never did get to wear my full complement of medals in uniform nor did I ever get all the ones that I am entitled to ...
