Rudy Giuliani's announcement that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination brings to my mind a book I wrote in the early 1990s, "The Conservative Crack-Up." When I wrote the book, Ronald Reagan's successor, President George H. W. Bush, was ignoring many of the constituent ingredients of the Reagan Revolution, for instance, tax cuts. The various factions of the conservative coalition were disgruntled and threatening to take a walk. Once again liberal pundits were diagnosing the conservative movement as moribund.

Well, of course he doesn't have to convince you. He's not a politician.
oh wait...
I heard a rumor yesterday that George Allen may run for Governor again! Woo Hoo! :-)
Will you happily support him by voting for him in the primary? That's what it's going to take - people keep saying he can't win - we need to get the right candidate for us in the primaries. That's where the little guy gets a voice!
You're fighting a losing battle. There are many old-fashioned conservatives here who just won't vote for someone like Rudy no matter what he does. It'll be interesting to see who pops up as the third party candidate and how much support he/she will really get.
Sadly, for me, the NY primary occurs far to late in the political season. If Hunter is able to attract some support, and $$$ in the early going..then he'll have a chance to make his case. I want Hunter in the race...his presence will encourage, nay, even force, Rudy to stress his conservative positions, which is a good thing..All I'm saying is listen to the guy..
There won't be a third party candidate. And I refuse to believe that if the election comes down to Rudy v. Hillary, principaled social conservatives will sit on their hands and stay home..We are at war..facing perhaps the most dangerous enemy ever. It'll be very hard to hold the huge Pro-Life March in DC in 2009 if the Mall, and the surrounding city, is contaminated by a dirty bomb..Think about it..
Well, that's what I think...I think when the choice is there, Conservatives will do what's best for our Country, and that is vote in the Republican, even if it's just a vote against Hillary. Although I've been ASSURED here that won't happen, I bet things will be different in two years. Alot could happen. If we have another attack, God forbid, all bets are off. Ironically, conservatives are always bemoaning the fact that libs have forgotten about 9/11. Sometimes I wonder if the same things can be said about them.
He uses all of the law enforcememt and legal power of the state against a whole industry, manufacturers, distributors and dealers, all of whom are federally licensed and who follow federal laws. However, he "supports" the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
Yeah, that's honesty!

I'm not asking them to do that. We, as conservtives, have been disappointed time and again, including myself. My God, look at Pataki...He went from being an outstanding conservative governor his first term, to ending up as possibbly worse than Cuomo..And conservatives, being, for the most part, positive, optimistic people, want to vote FOR a candidate, FOR what he believes, and not merely against the other guy..
All I ask those is that they listen to Rudy. I've seen what he's done in NY. I remember the pogroms we had under Dinkins. I remember seeing homeless defecating in the middle of the streets in midtown Manhattan at two in the afternoon.I believe Rudy is more in tune with social conservatives than they realize, let him make his case..that's all..
Exactly. Not a dimes' worth of difference.
Or, as Jackson Browne said: You take Sally and I'll take Sue, Ain't no difference between the two.....
When Rudy wins the nomination he may be smart to choose Duncan Hunter for his VP as long as Duncan isn't painted as a nut by the media.
I will not vote for a person who used the legal power of the state to PERSECUTE a legal, moral and necessary industry.
However, I will not sit on my hands. I will actively commit my money and time to defeating him and the Clinton monster.
If it comes down to him or her in the election, I will write in an acceptable candidate. Political expediency is no reason to vote for someone who has a history of actively trashing our Constitution.
I agree with you. It's hard for people to understand that in order to inact any change in NY, there was definitely some compromise in personal values for Rudy. I lived in New York during Koch and Dinkins. That's why I left. NY is like a different city now, and it is because of Rudy.
That's you're right. And if you, and many others like you, do indeed act that way, then you and I together, my friend, will both prove the maxim that in a democracy citizens elect the government they deserve.
More to the point, during 9/11, as millions panicked as fled to safety, Rudy went TO the Towers, to Groudn Zero. He understood instinctively that in a crisis, you have to lead from the front.
Not all Republican voters are social conservatives, particularly outside of the South. In the Northeast and West Coast and Upper Midwest, social conservatism is not popular, especially now. And even in the South, there are social conservatives who will vote for Giuliani over the 'rat nominee. The Citadel did not invite Giuliani because nobody in SC supports him.
The real problem for social conservatives is that their best candidate cannot and will not run (Jeb Bush), and the other options are a bunch of mini-mees. Duncan Hunter is a nationally unknown Congresscritter who was never in the leadership. Republicans do not nominate unknowns.
It will take more than opposing Rudy to beat him in the primaries. You need a genuine alternative. Right now, there isn't one.
Boomp.
I largely agree. Our country needs a decisive leader with common sense. Rudy is a leader and managed to turn around much of the liberal nonsense in New York City and make it a livable place again. That is a huge accomplishment. He is a proven leader with solid national security and budget credentials. We just need to make it clear to him that he must veer to the right to receive our support.
