Pa. senator indicted on 139 counts
By MARYCLAIRE DALE, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago
State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo, one of the most powerful figures in Pennsylvania politics, was indicted Tuesday on 139 counts, including federal charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and use of Senate employees as campaign aides.
Many of the charges stem from Fumo's ties to a nonprofit agency in his South Philadelphia district.
Authorities had been investigating the Citizens' Alliance for Better Neighborhoods for more than four years. The group was started by Fumo aides in 1991 to serve the neighborhood where he grew up.
The indictment, which runs more than 200 pages, also charges the group's longtime executive director, Ruth Arnao, and it names two ex-Senate staffers. The two former staff members already had been charged with obstructing the investigation by deleting years worth of e-mail about Fumo's ties to the charity.
Fumo, anticipating the indictment on Monday, temporarily stepped down as the ranking Democrat on the appropriations committee but remains in the Senate.
The Philadelphia Democrat, who has beaten two previous indictments, vowed to clear his name.

Another one of those damned Republican members of the culture of corruption, I see! s/
I surprised that they even mentioned his political affiliation since hes a Democrat.
But you see they make you read down to find it. Usually that is right after the name.
If he was a Republican there would had been an (R) in the headline.
I am shocked and saddened. /sarc
Maybe they were hoping no one would last until the final sentence.
He is a typical democrat, and he probably WILL beat the rap as usual. And why not? After all, the democrat party stuffs the judiciary with absolutely crooked, oops I meant "activist," judges.
You forgot he was abused as a child, and the alcohol made him do it...
Could the third indictment be the charm? Of course not, he is a Democrat but that's not to say he won't suffer. My bet is this inconvenience may put a crimp in Vinnie's first quarter profits.
I am surprised...no shocked.. that he has been indited since he is a RAT, There must have been a series mistake. WE all know that the RATS can perjure, steal, kill & bribe & the worst that normally happens are a few dirty looks their way.
But should a VRWC burp in public, well.. castration is the minimal penalty after being stripped of all honor, position & a large amount of money.
yup the playing ground in politics is truly level, isn't it?
At least they mentioned in the article that he was a Democrat.
I knew he was a democrat as soon as I realized they didnt tag his name with his party affiliation in the headline
"right after the name..."
ONLY when it is a Republican Congressman!
And a single bright star in the heavens over his house, being as he's from Philly.
Yo, Vinnie...da boss wantza see yuh.
Fugettaboutit!
Corruption scandals was the number one issue in Nov 2006, trumping Iraq in the exit polls.
Dem indictments are necessary to reverse November. We need to find more indictable dirt on Dem Congress people. This one is just state legislature.
They buried it down several paragraphs.
