verybody in the United States could switch from cars to bicycles.
The Chinese could close all their factories.
Europe could give up electricity and return to the age of the lantern.
But all those steps together would not come close to stopping global warming.

I don't understand why so many people care about global warning. Who doesn't like warm weather?
Here's an excerpt from an LA times story from June 24, 2006:
Greenland's Ice Sheet Is Slip Sliding Away
By Robert Lee Hotz
The Los Angeles Times
Saturday 24 June 2006
The massive glaciers are deteriorating twice as fast as they were five years ago.....
..... Even after a lifetime of study, the raffish NASA glaciologist with a silver dolphin in one pierced ear was dismayed by how quickly the breakup had occurred.
.... Should all of the ice sheet ever thaw, the meltwater could raise sea level 21 feet and swamp the world's coastal cities, home to a billion people. It would cause higher tides, generate more powerful storm surges and, by altering ocean currents, drastically disrupt the global climate.
Climate experts have started to worry that the ice cap is disappearing in ways that computer models had not predicted.
......From cores of ancient Greenland ice extracted by the National Science Foundation, researchers have identified at least 20 sudden climate changes in the last 110,000 years, in which average temperatures fluctuated as much as 15 degrees in a single decade.
The increasingly erratic behavior of the Greenland ice has scientists wondering whether the climate, after thousands of years of relative stability, may again start oscillating...................
Sorry, that happens not to be the case for several reasons.
""I thought that my sarcasm was quite obvious.""
It was but I just want everyone to know. I suppose I should grow a sense of humor about this whole debate because it does'nt do any good to be serious about it.
As a person with a hard science background it's tough to see such a mockery made of science for the sake of politics.
Sorry if I was cranky in my response. People need to know the truth. I had a huge argument with two libs today in my office and I kept stating facts regarding global warming and they continued parroting "what if" answers.
I laughed and told them I said the same thing about Iraq.
What if Saddam had WMD and gave them to terrorists?
They said that was different???? Go figure!
Didn't Greenland used to be Green Land....
How are the global warming nuts going to explain the current deep freeze in the East and Midwest? Oh, I know. Back in 1965 they were warning about global cooling. It must have finally arrived.
It's cold in Florida right now.
If bullsh*t were bullion, the streets of earth would be paved with gold.
Oops - meant to comment. Two things that I see. They don't know diddly using their models, and 20 severe changes over 110,000 years means my SUV didn't cause it.
That said, I think the way to go about this "problem" is - if we can actually predict that there will be long-term warming is to adapt to the warmer weather rathing that trying to change it.
And adapt we will - but how soon or how late will affect a lot of people.
Only trouble is the ice on greenland and most of it on Antartica are on land - so if it melts it WOULD fill up the glass.
Well, for me, every time I hear the words, "Global Warming," I lose about three pounds.
The ice on Greenland is on land, not in the water. Melt that and you wouldn't want to be living in Venice or some low-lying Pacific Islands.
But global warming has been occurring for some 15,000 years--we used to have a few thousand feet of ice over Seattle and along the northern portions of the US. Ever see the long, linear landforms on the coast of Maine? They were caused by glaciers.
The debate should not be about whether global warming is occurring--we have had a sea level rise of about 400 feet in the past 15,000 years. The debate should be about the cause, and whether anything can be done about it.
My opinion? Fluctuations of the sun are the cause, and we can't do very much about it. That's why we have the same type of global warming reported for Mars and Titan.
Stop farting or breathing.
And here's why:
Based on concentrations (ppb) adjusted for heat retention characteristics | Percent of Total | Percent of Total --adjusted for water vapor |
Water vapor | ----- | 95.000% |
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) | 72.369% | 3.618% |
Methane (CH4) | 7.100% | 0.360% |
Nitrous oxide (N2O) | 19.000% | 0.950% |
CFC's (and other misc. gases) | 1.432% | 0.072% |
Total | 100.000% | 100.000% |
See, the trick is to leave out water vapor. It's called manipulating the data to support your hypothesis.
And our contribution to CO2? Here's info on that:
True. Too bad these clowns never took a sixth grade science class. As for CO2, the more there is, the more photosynthesis occurs. And 80-90% of that is through the oceans and lakes.
exactly....
We'll even round it up to 4% for manmade CO2 if they will only admit the water vapor.
