Space shuttle astronaut arrested at OIA on attempted kidnapping, battery charges
Orlando Sentinel ^ | February 5, 2007 | Henry Pierson Curtis

A NASA astronaut is charged with attacking her rival for another astronaut's attention early Monday at Orlando International Airport, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

Lisa Marie Nowak drove from Texas to meet the 1 a.m. flight of a younger woman who had also been seeing the male astronaut Nowak pined for, according to Orlando police.

Nowak -- who was a mission specialist on a Discovery launch last summer -- was wearing a trench coat and wig and had a knife, BB pistol, rubber tubing and plastic bags, reports show. Once U.S. Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman arrived, Nowak followed her to the airport's Blue Lot for long-term parking, tried to get into Shipman's car and doused her with pepper spray, according to reports.

"I hope she and her family recover and are blessed with a second chance and come out of this OK. I hope despite the silliness of her escapade, and the due derision she is receiving on these boards, that she needs help right now and a little understanding. We're all just human afterall."

You're a wonderful human being. God Bless.

That's what I don't get. What new info came out since the originally charge?

"You can take it to the bank that Lisa Nowak had exactly what it takes to be an astronaut."

Had? She didn't prove that over the weekend, did she?

Nowak's car was parked miles away at the Hotel. Possible intent to hijack Shipman's vehicle.

I don't see how they can charge this woman with attempted murder, considering she just used pepper spray on the other woman.

That too seemed pretty extreme to me.

And as far as wearing a diaper, this gal is an Astronaut. What do people think they do in space???

Well, I have heard that during long duration spacewalks, they DO wear diapers.

I'm on FOX.

Defense is asking for a GPS monitor..saying she is a member of the Armed Forces, etc.

Defense calls it a "mistake"...I like this lawyer :)

"He hasn't been implicated in adultery. Nowak said they weren't having an affair, and neither he nor Shipman -- who do appear to be in a relationship -- appear to be married."

Well...we have Nowak's statement...but I'd say at this point, her credibility is a little questionable. Perhaps "implicated," was not quite the best word, although IMHO, her driving 900 miles, and initiating a confrontation with "the other woman" implies a level of intimacy that would typically only develop after a physical relationship....then again, so little of this story seems typical.

There's a lot of potential murder weaponry and paraphernalia, not to mention the lengths she went to. So it's reasonable to assume she meant harm.

Still, there's a long way from there to "beyond a reasonable doubt."

Perhaps it has to do with Nowak's love letter to Oefelein -- a murder/suicide threat, maybe.

She seems to have lost a lot of weight in the last couple of years. It changed her face from 2002. I figured that cutesy astronaut picture was quite old - like a real-estate agent photo - but it's just a few years.

So....is that a sign of a health issue, or the infidelity issue? ...or did NASA just have a weight quota for the trip?

The DA is out for blood. She needs a good shrink to evaluate her mental condition and get some help..

Her career is over...
