Queen's grand entrance to bay [Huge ocean liner berths in San Francisco]
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 4, 2007 | SF Chronicle

The ocean liner Queen Mary 2 got a reception fit for royalty when it sailed through San Francisco's Golden Gate on Sunday.

The rails of the Golden Gate Gate bridge were lined with people, and the bay was crowded with vessels large and small, sailboats, tour boats, a fireboat, the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien, and many smaller craft, even a rowboat or two that were there to welcome the ship.

The Queen Mary 2 stopped traffic on the bridge cold; and no wonder. It is the largest ship ever to sail into San Francisco since the first European vessel 233 years ago.

"It was spectacular, marvelous,'' said Perry Lloyd, an Englishman who sailed on the QM2 13,880 nautical miles around South America from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Despite the comments so far on this thread, I think this would have been a magnificent sight to see.

"At 151,000 tons and 1,131 feet long, there has never been a ship this large in San Francisco Bay. The Queen Mary 2 is so large that it had to wait for a change in the tidal current to dock at Pier 27 under Telegraph Hill.
It spent the twilight and early evening anchored off Treasure Island.
The Queen Mary 2 sails tonight at 8 for Honolulu and the second leg of its around-the-world voyage. There will be a lunch for important visitors today, but members of the public will not be allowed aboard for security reasons.
The ship will be full again when it sails tonight. About 2,000 passengers are boarding in San Francisco."

Looks like shes just slipping under the Golden Gate.

Is that a surveillance camera in the top-left of that shot? I don't suppose anyone would have any information regarding that? I work for a company that produces surveillance equipment, so I'm curious. :)

If it's the grey thing you're referring to, it looks like a loudspeaker/ megaphone.
