Health officials warn of new HIV threat found in King County (Seattle)
The Seattle Times ^ | Feb. 2, 2007 | Warren King

Four men in King County have been diagnosed with a strain of HIV that is extremely hard to treat, and health officials are concerned it could spread further.

At least two types of HIV drugs don't work against the strain, and another type has limited effectiveness, officials from Public Health — Seattle & King County said Thursday.

"It's conceivable there can be more infections, and the gay community is at highest risk," said Dr. Bob Wood, the HIV/AIDS program director for Public Health.

All the men were diagnosed with the strain as soon as they tested positive for the virus — unlike other HIV patients who develop drug resistance over time, often from taking medications inconsistently, Wood said. But there is no evidence the strain is rapidly spreading.

The four known cases were found over the course of more than a year. These were the only such cases reported in the state.

Wood said all of the infected men are gay and have had multiple partners, most anonymous. They also used methamphetamine, which tends to increase sexual activity.

The Africa situation is different -- there, as I understand people indeed don't understand the disease.

But there is NO EXCUSE for ANYONE in the US to go and infect others, when they know they have HIV.

You advocate the same philosophy that seeks compassion for the criminals, but not their victims.

But when a large number of the population has a devastating and deadly disease, that is the time, when the government needs to step in, test everyone, quarantine the infected ones to save the rest of the population.

Quarantine would allow the people to live with others relatively normally, would just keep them from running around infecting others. Quarantines were used for many deadly diseases throughout history.

These poor victims of the draconian administration should sue the RNC.

"Quarantining is really not that drastic"

Let me take a shot in the dark... You're not HIV+. Quarantining is imprisonment of the innocent. I have difficulty thinking of something more drastic.

Also, those numbers you post include Sub Saharan Africa where HIV infected people make up 10-30 percent of the population. Do you honestly believe that a dirt poor country can lock up 30 percent of it's population?

Let me ask you, since you clearly see it as so critical as to justify striping millions of their liberties, would you support free condoms in high schools?

I wish we could here from some Seattle freepers who know about their own community and the lifestyles of those who live there.

My ???? would be to those who actually know is it possible that the street teens who have given up on life and are IV drug users and sell tail to the older men who could not attract a fly gay or straight for their addiction to sex aka casual sex.

And in my pretend case scenerio add woman who are sharing needles or who are trolling for young teens like their men counterparts who can only score casual sex by buying it from drug addicted young teens (anononmous and all) the same young IV drug using teens who don't care who the have sex for money with male or female.

Now curious to here from those who live in the area.

"as I understand people indeed don't understand the disease. "

So it would seem that we would have a moral obligation to educate them.

"You advocate the same philosophy that seeks compassion for the criminals, but not their victims. "

No, yo are advocating the philosophy of criminalizing the ill.

"when the government needs to step in, test everyone..."

Castro would be proud, though I have to say your conservative credentials are a bit thin.

Easily transmittable diseases, which HIV is not.

I concur fully with you.

But giving someone HIV by having anonymous sex always gets treated by Democrats as though it's the Republican's fault the promiscuous one got HIV in the first place.

It's the same mentality which floats the Dems boat on Universal Health. A carrier of a deadly SEXUAL disease is a "victim" of the puritanical, evil business mind set of... conservatives.

Then there's the cross hatch fugue mind set of: Well, If I were Queen Hillary, I'd order everyone in every town, city, and compound to HAVE to be tested. And after that I'd order brain scans on invitro babies just to make sure they weren't carrying the dreaded "Republican" disease; after checking out the voting patterns of "its" parents.

I'm saying this: It's a slippery slope to demand that all adults be forced to what amounts to a "bed check" medical scan in case "they might be carrying a disease" and/or be promiscuous.

Libertine Sex is what created the Modern New Democrats. Like heck, they are going to abandon their glorious cause despite how many die or become infected.

Okay. Now, we live in the future, and those who are carrying HIV/AIDS are .. what? Castrated? Sewn up? Special codes on their driver's license indicating a potential criminal offense in the act of committing sex?

FairOpinion, I'm ranting aloud. I know I feel the same way as you do on this subject.

Look, I feel sorry for people who are HIV+ due to one mistake, that they were duped by someone who knew they were HIV+ and infected them. One would think that these innocent HIV+ people would think that quarantining those who infected them in the first place is too gentle and wish that their killers would be shot.

People who are HIV+ and ACT RESPONSIBLY -- i.e. TELL their prospective partners before engaging in activities that may infect them and take serious precautions are OK in my book. But if most people acted that way, we wouldn't see the continuing spread we see.

But since clearly most of those who are infected are more interested in their own pleasure and don't care how many people they kill, to satisfy their urges are plain and simply killers and need to be removed from society, to keep them from murdering other people.

In highschools, since you asked, I believe in EDUCATION -- people who practice abstinence don't get STDs and they should understand that one mistake can literally doom them for life.

It is a serious dilemma, I totally agree. Government intrusion could be something like "the cure is worse than the disease" -- but this disease is starting to hit the inflexion point, where the needs of society outweigh the needs of individuals. Don't forget that we spend BILLIONS of $ on this too.

But when you see the government (so far it's only the UK) doesn't treat people who need hip replacement, because they are overweight, so "it's their fault" but it's not PC to do the same who definitely acquire HIV due to their own actions, there is something amiss.

Some MD proposed the same kind of healthcare rationing in the US --- to not treat overweight people and smokers for ANY disease, because they don't deserve it, but HIV/AIDS is never included in the list, there is something REALLY wrong.

Anyways, I also read that they cure themselves by having sex with infants.

Gee, you don't suppose that has anything to do with it? Or raping women? Or the fact that it's the women who nurse their sick children and other family memebers and are in contact with blood and bodily fluids without proper hygiene or precautions?

So the fastest spread is there. So what? It could only mean that they were the last group to become infected and it isn't spreading in the other groups because most of them already have it. It doesn't mean they are choosing to make lifestyle choices that increase it. That makes it sound like they're responsible for it somehow, like gays are here.

I remember reading about some African men preferring "dry sex" so much so that even educated woman are willing to obliged them.

Quarantines work well for airborne or highly contagious diseases like TB or polio. This is a sexually transmitted disease. Quarantining is not the answer, stopping the behavior is.

I have my own ideas about how to stop the spread of AIDS/HIV in the homosexual community that would be pretty effective. It would reduce the spread to needle users only. Nuff said.

"In highschools ... people who practice abstinence "

So, it is a big enough problem to strip millions of their freedom, but condoms, a proven effective strategy at controlling the spread of HIV is going too far. That is idiotic.

"...innocent HIV+ people would think that quarantining those who infected them in the first place is too gentle and wish that their killers would be shot."

You seem to think that the majority of HIV infections were by those who knew they were HIV positive. I have no idea how you came to that conclusion but I've seen no evidence to back it up.

Up to 30% of the people that are HIV+ in this country have no idea. Those are the ones most likely to spread the disease.

"But since clearly most of those who are infected are more interested in their own pleasure and don't care how many people they kill,"

Where did you get this truly strange concept of AIDS infected sex zombies? It sounds like a night of the living dead flash back.

There have been a couple cases of people trying to infect others but it is rare and surprise it's already a crime.

So what? We are supposed to feel sorry for these crazy fags who bring this upon themselves by their abonimable lifestyle a.k.a. deathstyle?<<<<

I think its the compassionate thing to do, as these are people who are severely mentally ill to start with, and the infections they get with their wildly promiscuous deathstyles doesn't make them any saner.
