Gates Slams Mac Ads, Questions Mac Security

Microsoft co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates has openly criticized Apple's 'Get a Mac' ads, called the company a liar, and questioned the security of Apple's Mac OS X operating system. In a recent interview with Newsweek, Gates compared Microsoft's recently released security-oriented Windows Vista to Apple's Mac OS X: "We made it way harder for guys to do exploits," Gates said, referring to Windows Vista. "The number [of violations] will be way less because we've done some dramatic things [to improve security] in the code base. Apple hasn't done any of those things." The executive also referenced the frequent discovery of flaws in Mac OS X. "Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine." Gates was likely referring to the 'Month of Apple Bugs' project -- which came under intense criticism this week for exploiting Safari users attempting to view a freshly-discovered bug.

It's really stunning to be called a liar by someone as ill-informed as him. Thanks for the data support.

"I would think that there are a lot of people out there like me who are fed up with MS....especially after looking at VISTA and its bloatware...and the outragious and confusing prices.....I think MS has shot themselves in the foot big time."

You may want to think again. Despite the pounding that Microsoft gets on the internet, most people are not fed up with Windows. People are able to use it problem free for the most part. And the likelihood is that most people will be using Vista in the coming years just like they use XP now.

It's best to never let your dislike for a product somehow be mistaken as a general dislike in the overall population.

They always say "no", then I tell them if I can't make it work in 2 days, I'll bring it back. I very rarely take it back!

That's great, it's what distinguishes us computer geeks from chat-room inhabitants, but the vast majority of computer users would give up after two minutes.

My point stands.

Okay, that's weird. I put in the individual pages for each of those models, but they all came out as the dual USB iBook. Anyway, click down the menu on the side to see the right pages.

Gates Slams Mac Ads...

It's his own fault.

In Microsoft’s own propaganda for Vista, it came out with an online article on the msn web page, entitled “Windows Vista: 15 Reasons to Switch.” http://tech.msn.com/microsoft/article.aspx?cp-documentid=2664459&gt1=9013

And guess what reason #1 is? It is more “Mac-like.”

1. It's the Interface, Stupid
Perhaps the best thing about Windows Vista is the most obvious: its new interface. With transparent animated windows that swoosh into place, subtle and elegant colors, a new Start menu, and plenty of other changes, this is the most beautiful version of Windows you've seen. If you've ever had Mac envy, this is the Windows you want--it's the most Mac-like interface yet.

So, if Microsoft’s Number One reason for me to switch to Vista is that it is more Mac-like, why shouldn’t I just skip all the hassle and the hype, drop a couple of extra bucks and save myself a bunch of time and buy a Mac?

I have a correction. Caught up in the heat of battle, I fell for an Apple marketing gimmick. I say that ads for the new Dual USB iBook released in 2001. It never entered my mind that Apple would make a big deal of going from one USB port to including two USB ports as a major inovation!

The DUAL USB iBook came out in 2001.

The first was the 2001 USB ibook. That is why they used the USB in the name because it was the first one.

First iBook introduced in 1999 had a single 1.1 USB port. The 2001 iBook was referred to as the 'duel USB' model because it was the first iBook with two USB ports.

Why not just get a Mac to begin with?

The truth is that shortly after creating the iBook, the iPod, and the iMac Apple, clearly on a roll, released the iTimemachine allowing their users to royally screw up the space time continuum thus causing some freepers no end of confusion.

Apple only did this because (time-traveling) iPod users were complaining that their USB iPods couldn't work with their Macs. </sarc>

--2. The iPod was released originally with firewire only.--

I stand corrected. I guess that is why I never heard of the IPOD before 1993. All I remember was seeing a bunch of Apple computer users complaining about IPOD using the USB port. I guess they were diehard Apple users that didn't like Apple moving to the USB standard.

You mean the iPod wasn't compatible with Apple computers when the interface was IEEE1394a?

More LOL at you.

iPods have NEVER been incompatible with Apple computers, silly.

Two pcs, six years running -- no issues with malware/viruses or security. The Mac ads are immature on all fronts. I suppose pcs require a dose of intelligence to healthily maintain... if that. Microsoft's comments are not out of line.

I simply don't like Macintosh's software library. And the OS functions like a Commodore Amiga.

Yes, I own a Mac. About a dozen of them. Legacy software support on the net is abysmal. Legacy software support within the OSes is WORSE than abysmal.

No, thanks.

I already shown that you have posted falsely about haveing an ibook before they came out.

Any luck finding the post wherein you claim I said I had an iBook before they came out?

Imagine a commercial featuring the Mac guy and the Dell guy.

Dude, you're getting a Dell!

No, I'm a Mac.

Oh. You wanna get high?

Uh, OK.
