FORMER Guantanamo Bay detainee and NSW election candidate Mamdouh Habib says there are no terrorists in Australia.
Mr Habib launched his campaign today for next month's state election on a human rights platform on which he opposes the country's anti-terror laws.
He said the laws were not necessary in a peaceful country like Australia.
"We have no terrorists in Australia," Mr Habib said in the Sydney electorate of Auburn.
"This country is a peaceful country, I believe Australia is the best country in the world.
"The terror laws are if you have terrorists, but we don't have terrorists, I believe."
Mr Habib was detained in the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for three years without charge after being arrested in Pakistan for allegedly training with terror group al-Qaeda.
The father of four, running for the safe Labor seat of Auburn, said it didn't matter what chances he had of victory, but that it was important to speak for the people of the community.
Mr Habib said he had no comments to make about Premier Morris Iemma, who yesterday said the people of Auburn would not put up with Mr Habib's "extremism and lunacy".
"I don't care about Morris Iemma or John Howard, I worry about myself," Mr Habib said.
"I have no answer to anyone saying Mr Habib is an extremist. We're here to focus on what we must try to do in our area. Whatever anyone says, I have no problem."

I, for one, believe him. If we can't trust the terrorists, who can we trust?
They don't consider lying to infidels, lying. It's only lying if you make an untrue statement to another muslim.
