Origins of Free Republic
Self

Posted on 01/31/2007 7:17:49 PM PST by festus

So how far back does the Free Republic archive articles and how can I go back and find some of the first threads that started the whole thing off ?

It struck me I've hung out for a while and it was well established when I joined.

Be fun to see what we were focused on day one. For me anyway.

Yes, bttt. I haven't pinged you, Guenevere, for a while. There must be lots of us that just pop in and out.

There was no political correctness back in '97, and you rarely got banned for anything. Dodge City before Matt Dillon.

But in the past 3-4 years many of us old timers have had to suck it in and learn the new PC ways.

Not a good trend, I fear.

So you don't pop in, get a shot off and jump out anymore?:)

You're getting lazy. Turn that TV off and do something!

I'm not normally politically correct anywhere except funerals. I have manners with my relatives only. Gals have dirty minds too:) Dirtier ones. And I was AD for 6YRS. They must be my civilian Training Instructors. One never stops learning.

I was listening to Robby Noel, who used to post here as 'robnoel', and he told me about FreeRepublic. I was actually using WebTv at the time, an inexpensive way to get on the internet. I still use it sometimes, my MSN serves both my computer and my WebTv.

Actually attended some events with the D.C. Chapter, somewhere there's a picture of me playing my Mark VI tenor in front of the White House.

There was a great influx of new members, a lot of whom didn't understand the original concept of FR. Lots of pissy, bitchy, personal-attacky, type stuff. So I went away for a while. Like 4 or 5 years of a while.

If you click my name, member #21490, you can find some fun threads.

I first found FR on that fateful day in early 98, when Drudge posted the headlines about Clinton and an affair. While scrolling through the column headings on Drudge, I saw the one entitled "Whitewater," and clicked, and was hooked.

Ditto here. That sordid mess kick-started a lot of blogs.

Don't think so, I like to play around with names (just killing time) and see if anyone actually used those account names. Some folks signed up and only did a few posts, but you can find their posts on a search.

Thanks. Now this is going to drive me crazy because I thought I remembered my original screen name, but it doesn't show up. I've tried every combination of a screen name I think I've ever used and none of them come up. I guess I'll never really know when I first joined. :)

Posters use to start threads on walls of caves, moved up to the new technology, beating logs with sticks and then entered the information highway with fires, smoke and blankets. Semaphores were used briefly but were quickly outdated by telegraph. And that’s where we are today. Hope this helped.
