Origins of Free Republic
Self

Posted on 01/31/2007 7:17:49 PM PST by festus

So how far back does the Free Republic archive articles and how can I go back and find some of the first threads that started the whole thing off ?

It struck me I've hung out for a while and it was well established when I joined.

Be fun to see what we were focused on day one. For me anyway.

The Other Harry.

I have a tribute to him on my FReep page.

He was unique and one of a kind.

See my post #561 I think you're thinking of The Other Harry.

If I'm remembering correctly he/she/it posted about there being a "host over the sun" as he/she/it had been staring at the sun. That was also one of the last threads CGEB posted (I think).

That's it! ClasseyGreeneyedBlonde said "she (he)" was staring at the host over the sun, and I said that would cause blindness!

The replies on that thread were hysterical, LOL!

This may have been answered later on, but I'm still catching up. Were you thinking of BC Johnson?

If, on the other hand, you enjoy being entertained by a random wiseass who occasionally says something funny, I live to serve.

LOL. What would the free republic be without all us random wisea$$e$ ?

Entertain away!

For some reason I never did figure out, my early registration kept getting reset every now and again, and I'd have to re-register with a different password. I finally "stuck" sometime in 1999. I don't think everyone of the earliest FR registrants had this experience, though.
***Yes, it happened to quite a few of us, which was why I helped to start the "What was my login club".

Now where's A+Bert? Or Mojo? Or CaL? Or BadJoe? MarathonMan? cornelis? Mike Gallutia? dixie sass? chesty-puller? bigun? JENX?"

Cornelis is still posting, if memory serves.

I am the poster formerly known as Mojo.
(I was also Hon.)

I'm amazed you are now admitting that, moj..
Anyone know what happened to Navigator?

OWK, alias OneWhoKnows, my favorite foil in the Great Libertarian/Conservative Debates. :-}

OWK was one of the most intelligent and well versed posters I've run across here. Gruff at times, but the man knew his stuff.

I was on the Art Bell mailing list as well. I had a huge debate with MJ SETI. Perhaps you kept some of that on your computer hard drive? I would love to use some of that material in a book I'm working on. Stan Deyo posted a response to our debate that was really spooky, something about Edward Teller running a base in Antarctica and we're all doomed...

Navigator! That's the other one of that ... odd ... trinity.

I know cornelis is still around. He's always got the most quizzical posts. I picture him as a cross between the Cheshire Cat and Richard Feynman.

A lot of moons have risen and set and a lot of names have come and gone ...

I remember one day when Gonzo got a Secret Service visit due to some questionable remarks made here

I remember that and it was scarey stuff that any of us could be tracked down like that!

I wonder how many of us remember how screwed up a thread could become when someone forgot to close the HTML tags

Now those were the good old days! LOL
