Origins of Free Republic
Self
Posted on 01/31/2007 7:17:49 PM PST by festus
So how far back does the Free Republic archive articles and how can I go back and find some of the first threads that started the whole thing off ?
It struck me I've hung out for a while and it was well established when I joined.
Be fun to see what we were focused on day one. For me anyway.

I was using WebTV, so I had a lot of trouble. Once I got a computer, I never had trouble again and with a new e-mail address, I signed on as onyx. Using WebTV, I used my own first name --- not a good idea.

Yep, with a dixie cup jammed into the 5.25 disk drive on your Commodore 64 and a string running up the street to the next freeper.

I had the same problem...lurked, registered...back and forth to another forum(which shall remain nameless) and everytime I came back I would have to re-register....don't know why....But I always could re-register with my same screen name. Haven't changed it all this time. I only just needed a new password. I chuckle when the occasional twit comes along trying to wave around how long they've been here, and I say I've been around since '97, and they say "but your profile says '99."

I'm only in my eighth year --- not counting my WebTV year. I think I posted less than 20 times. I was overwhelmed...lol. I had a terrible time trying to stay on line.

Yeah, I bet you're right. I found this site when I was doing a lycos search for either Clinton stuff or the McCain anti-tobacco thing. Should have signed up right then, LOL.

OWK, alias OneWhoKnows, my favorite foil in the Great Libertarian/Conservative Debates. :-}

Using WebTV, I used my own first name --- not a good idea.Back then the internet was still fairly new to the general public, and most of us didn't think about security.

WebTV was a clunky system, especially compared to what computers are today. I'm amazed you stayed patient with it until you could get a PC.
