Political analyst and former Democrat insider Keith Thompson says even though Duncan Hunter is considered a long-shot for the White House, the California congressman could move into the top tier of GOP hopefuls as the 2008 presidential campaign progresses.
Hunter officially entered the 2008 presidential "sweepstakes" last week, Thompson notes. He says the candidate, as the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has a strong conservative voting record working in his favor; and he is particularly known for his support of the military and his opposition to illegal immigration.
For these reasons, Thompson feels the California representative is at the top of the second tier of Republican hopefuls right now and is capable of moving up. Hunter has "a fairly decent financial base right now [and] some key supporters who are helping him get his campaign to the next level," the political analyst points out; "so I think he could come right into that first tier very quickly and be a significant candidate for the nomination."
Hunter's biggest problem is name recognition, Thompson acknowledges. He says that is one advantage early GOP favorites John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have over the California lawmaker.
But even though Hunter does not come in with the years of exposure that those virtually "mythological figures" have, Thompson observes, he says "the name recognition factor could change," and Hunter could become a force to be reckoned with in the coming 2008 presidential campaign.
So you are OK with the omosexual agenda of GLAD and GLSN?
Your obsession with Duncan Hunter is hilarious!
Tell us why you think your choice for pubbie candidate would make a president?
He sounds like a potential Howard Dean, hopefully with a better termperment for politics. We do need someone new to shake things up and if people can focus on this guy as an alternative to the current mix, who knows what can happen?
That would only enhance Hillary's chances, given the electorate mentality.
Woo Hoo! GOOOOOOO Duncan! He's the one who can win the next presidential election! ;o)
...From Boston.com On Friday, an e-mail from Mitt Romneys sons suggested that whoever the Republican presidential nominee is will have to raise $100 million. Hunter said he wouldnt need to raise that kind of money because most of that money goes to pay for consultants that help them look like they are conservative and I am conservative already."
Huckabee has been a governor and thus, is far more likely to become president than a no name representative. We haven't had a Congressman elected president since 1880 and even that one, James Garfield, was an ex General in the Civil War.
If you like, I could make a effort.
I could list dozens of reasons why Hunter could not beat Hillary in a head to head race. Dozens..........
I might add, that I don't think we will field a candidate that will.
It is not because of the candidate. It is because no candidate will be able to put our fractured base back together. This base is shattered.
What we need is a Humpty Dumpty repairman.
The only thing that might make a difference, is a act by some outside force that would change the political dynamics. But if those dynamics don't change, the republican party has only just begun to feel the effects of the combined error that they have made politically.
One of the abortion-lovers fans referred to hunter supporters as KKK members. that comment is still up. What is your opinion on that?
Actually Dave, he's had "executive experience" leading men in combat. How's that sound. His district wasn't a "slam dunk" reelection proposition when the democrats controlled it...
I dont think Howlin was referring to conservatives, just those some of those "true believers" who have gone off the deep end. Those that never had a candidate they liked that got elected and are still bitter.
I really like Hunter. He would be my first choice. However, if he fails, I want a winner, and Rudy would be my choice.
You know, this is what the heck is wrong with people like you. You just make stuff up out of thin air. Get lost.
He's the most Reagan-like of any of the candidates.
That is pretty funny. Next we will hear that the Bears are worried about the football team from the Little Sisters of the Poor.
I wouldnt know. I along with 300 million other Americans dont know squat about Duncan Hunter, except that he is a politician and a Republican (currently Americans dislike both). Who is Duncan Hunter? What has he ever accomplished? What has he ever led? What campaign experience does he have outside of his gerrymandered congressional district?
Apology accepted. No one hates Nazis more than I especially Illinois Nazis.
Do you want to learn about him?
I think she should begin corresponding with former Governor McGreavy's wife.
