Political analyst says [Duncan] Hunter can move into GOP top tier

Political analyst and former Democrat insider Keith Thompson says even though Duncan Hunter is considered a long-shot for the White House, the California congressman could move into the top tier of GOP hopefuls as the 2008 presidential campaign progresses.

Hunter officially entered the 2008 presidential "sweepstakes" last week, Thompson notes. He says the candidate, as the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has a strong conservative voting record working in his favor; and he is particularly known for his support of the military and his opposition to illegal immigration.

For these reasons, Thompson feels the California representative is at the top of the second tier of Republican hopefuls right now and is capable of moving up. Hunter has "a fairly decent financial base right now [and] some key supporters who are helping him get his campaign to the next level," the political analyst points out; "so I think he could come right into that first tier very quickly and be a significant candidate for the nomination."

Hunter's biggest problem is name recognition, Thompson acknowledges. He says that is one advantage early GOP favorites John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have over the California lawmaker.

But even though Hunter does not come in with the years of exposure that those virtually "mythological figures" have, Thompson observes, he says "the name recognition factor could change," and Hunter could become a force to be reckoned with in the coming 2008 presidential campaign.

This is a good read by Mr. Thompson. Links the FR also. I do not think his blog is very well read though.

Above and beyond "name recognition,"

Duncan who? He's not a chairman of anything now. He's just another flunky congressman from a state of fruits and nuts. What executive experience has he had besides managing a congressional staff? What decisions has he been responsible for? When you are president, you cant hide among 434 other reps. You have to take responsibilty and make decisions be they popular or not. If having certain views is what you are interested in, why dont you get some other equally unknown candidate and tell him or her, these are your views. Run on these and we cant lose. Has Hunter ever run statewide for any office? No. Has he ever run for national office? No. What experience does he have in running a political campaign except for in a congressional district where his reelection is a slam dunk?

Stephan.... is the most feminine of the male Sunday talking heads. No doubt Duncan intimidated him a little bit. George will have to go home and take comfort with, well, whoever it is that comforts him.

Way to go airborne - I've contributed as well. If we believe a grassroots effort is what it's gonna take to get Hunter out there, then we've got to cough up the dough.

It's great that people post hopeful comments, but if you really believe he's the best conservative candidate out there, open up the checkbook. That doesn't preclude you giving to Newt - the other conservative candidate - should he elect to run. Right now, he's not and Duncan has what it takes philosophically. Now he needs financial help.

Please consider sending his campaign a couple hundred bucks or for that matter $25. You might be able to tell your children or grand children that you were on the ground floor of one of our country's great presidents.

Let's put some substance in this exchange.

Is Hunter the most conservative running, based his published record?

You do realize that this will greatly upset the rudynazis, right?
I RESENT BEING CALLED A NAZI! That is Not Necessary.

Did it occur to you that he wasn't necessarily talking about you, or anyone on fr at all? It only means anything if that's what you think you are. if you aren't, then the comment doesn't apply. In your case, i say it CERTAINLY doen't apply.

Since the assinine remark in #3 was removed I suppose the moderator is a "rudynazi" too.

You all have gone off the deep end with your hatred.

The good news is that the Mods are cracking down on this. These Rudy threads remind me of the Bush/Buchanan threads of 2000.

You know Dave, if I didn't know better I'd swear that you almost get a woody from coming into these threads and p*ssing all over Duncan Hunter.

You might be right. I'm still pissed at the Republicans for pissing away congress and now you guys are attempting to piss away the Presidency by running someone that has absolutely no chance of winning (unless Hillary gets caught having sex with a horse the day before the election).

You might want to read through threads before jumping to conclusions.

Oh please. Most of the savvy liberals I've spoken to think that the only chance Hillary has is against Rudy.

Thats anecdotal. Almost every poll taken shows Rudy beating Hillary by a mile..

He would prolly take PA..NJ and maybe CA.

I'm SO shocked at that aren't you? When will the accusations that we kill and eat babies start when Duncan has 0.5% support?
