Political analyst and former Democrat insider Keith Thompson says even though Duncan Hunter is considered a long-shot for the White House, the California congressman could move into the top tier of GOP hopefuls as the 2008 presidential campaign progresses.
Hunter officially entered the 2008 presidential "sweepstakes" last week, Thompson notes. He says the candidate, as the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has a strong conservative voting record working in his favor; and he is particularly known for his support of the military and his opposition to illegal immigration.
For these reasons, Thompson feels the California representative is at the top of the second tier of Republican hopefuls right now and is capable of moving up. Hunter has "a fairly decent financial base right now [and] some key supporters who are helping him get his campaign to the next level," the political analyst points out; "so I think he could come right into that first tier very quickly and be a significant candidate for the nomination."
Hunter's biggest problem is name recognition, Thompson acknowledges. He says that is one advantage early GOP favorites John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have over the California lawmaker.
But even though Hunter does not come in with the years of exposure that those virtually "mythological figures" have, Thompson observes, he says "the name recognition factor could change," and Hunter could become a force to be reckoned with in the coming 2008 presidential campaign.
"And you think that DOESN'T sound like Stormfront?"
I'll have to bow to your apparently superior knowledge of Stormfront, Peach, but from what little I know, they're Nazis themselves. So, why would they be calling someone they oppose a Nazi, too? You're not being logical.
It won't be necessary, because you will see them all play out in the coming months. Just trying to save you a lot of grief. But if you must, which you will, then carry on, but the future of the 2008 election is already written for the most part.
I've been on maybe six threads dealing with Hunter and I've never had anyone tell me any reason why he should be elected except he agrees with me, he is a Vietnam Vet, his son fought in Iraq (whoopee do, so did my congressman's kid and so did Senator Webb's for that matter), until the Republicans got the heave ho in the election he chairmanned the House Defense Porkbarrel spending. Fact that he agrees with so many of you that supported Buchannan tells me a lot about where he stands.
Can he raise he money needed to compete? No. Can he win the nomination? No. Can he win the general election? No. Other than that he is the ideal candidate. Come on guys give me some real reasons why this guy is presidential material.
Dave s...again ...soooo long
The one thing they all had in common was that they thought they were qualified to be President.
You obviously know little about the man.
And no one has given me any strong narrative reason why I should support the guy. In fact anyone in congress is tainted right now in my view, especialy chairmen. They just roll in the pork and pass the bills onto us.
Yes, that's how I see it.....He is the only chance, but I suspect he will be disdained by a large portion of this broken political base, and subsequently will be damaged. Just as Bush has been, during the past 30 months and even prior to that.
The self destruction has only just begun as watch this play out. The only real hope is that something will happen to stop the slide, and regroup the party. But its not much to pin any hope to.
The fact of life is that DINO trumps ANY RINO.
If Hilary Clinton can paint herself as a DINO, she beats all RINOs.
The rise of the DINOs is the lesson of Nov 7 2006
My first 10 reasons why Hunter can and should get our support. I penned this yesterday to a fellow freeper who inquired:
1. He is right on the issues. He does not need to backtrack and spin as McCain, Romney and Rudy will have to in order to get conservative primary voters to believe him. He has been a rock ribbed conservative his entire adult life. As he said, he doesn't need as much money to hire consultants to make him look conservative. As you can tell by freeper reaction to Hunter, there is a hunger for somone to the right of GWB, not to the left of him. So right off the bat, if he can get his message out, he will attract many, many conservatives, who I consider to be the base of the party, not the RINOS.
2. He is a real decorated Nam vet. Not a phony like Kerry, and this will at a minimum be a wash with Mclame's "war hero" status.
3. He is not a moonbat or one trick pony. Those go to the other longshots (or as I call them, no shots) Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo. He has been in the House leadership for years, and up until the 2006 election was Chairman of the Armed Services Committee.
4. He is an unapologetic Reaganite, in his views on the scope of government, the strength of the military. he enthusiastically supported Bush's tax cuts.
5. He wants to fence the border, and in fact has a link to continuing fence construction on his congressional web page.
6. Most importantly to me, he is a hawk in the WOT. There is no way that I can EVER support someone who isn't at least of Bush caliber when it comes to this issue. Crushing the islamo fascists is job one. I've only heard Bush, Santorum and Hunter call these bastards by that name.
7. He is ardently pro-life. Not squishy like McCain, liberal like Rudy or flip flopping like Mitt. He clearly states that R v W is bad law and wants to see the Court overturn it.
8. He walks the talk. Look at his Congress webpage and see the legislation he proposed and supported. Much of it got shuffled of to committees, as is typical, but you get a strong sense on what he believe in. He is pro military down to his core.
9. He treats the democrat traitors like the quislings they are. He lambasted Murtha on the House floor for being such a POS.
10. He looks good. Not like the weird looking McCain or the every hair in place Romney. If he can couple that with a solid speaking presence, then he will have a shot.
I love how this is stated by you as fact a year off from the first primary.
Oh, c'mon, like that's not a NAZI reference. You have gone ver the edge. Enough of the bashing here, will ya Geez. You start losing and go right to nazi references. that ain't right!
LOL, no worries, you busted me, I played back. I can't rag on people for typing, it's of little consequence anyway.
Nope, but let me tell you what I know beyond a doubt will happen if Rudy gets the Republican nod. The MSM will be hammering those very same negatives about Rudy 24/7. And Rudy will effectively be at 30 percent or below. Hillary will get the WH without having to lift a finger.
My friends call typo's Fierceisms. Don't sweat typo's with me! Thanks for posting it.
I know what you mean, but...We are on our 7th year in the 21st century. ;-)00
tick tock!
well stated.
I agree with your views, after a brief skim. That's why Rudy is unacceptable. Those who promote the agenda are unaceptable for the reasons you point out, and i pointed out last night.
I am no homophobe, i am homonauseated, sick of gays pushing their agenda. That's a lot of why rudy is unacceptable on the gay issue, which is only one of many of rudy's faults. .
First of all, it's not my job to educate you or that poster.
And, secondly, are you still in middle school? That post sure sounds like it.
That is for sure, no one can accuse the MSM or any big organization of pushing or helping "the Hunter." This is strictly a Grassroots effort and we like it that way...
I am the HUNTER... and as a "politician," I am as decent as they come!
