That's my gripe with it. I don't like someone dictating what I can do with my PC. I also dislike it being a resource hog. I don't mind building a powerful box if I'm going to be doing resource intensive work, but having to have such hardware just to run the OS is just crazy.
Who protects us from people willing to make things up to smear Microsoft?
I don't care about the additional eye-candy in the operating system. So-called security protections are also messing up my applications in industrial controls. A colleague who does HMI work for me had to uninstall the automatically installed Internet Explorer 7, since it conflicts with applications that he works with (not home games/graphics/fun stuff - WORK!). One of my platforms I am still running Windows2000 because XP interferes with certain communications protocols. And now this Vista with the so-called security - what is it going to delete? If it was not for the industrial automation (as in programmable logic controllers) software that I use, I am approaching the point of telling Microsoft to go to hell, and go to Macintosh, since OS-X is essentially UNIX. Stable, bulletproof, and still preferred for math intensive real time process modelling. UNIX (X-windows) is still used in oilfield seismic logging.
If anyone here works for Rockwell Automation, and there is anything being considered on versions of RSLogix/Networks/Panelbuilder Plus software running in OS-X, freepmail me. I'm a business partner in a systems integration company.
Nah, WinME can run very nicely if tweaked right. 3 of our 4 boxes run it and BSODs are something we see a combined total of maybe 2, 3 times a year.
Only times WinME's ever given me real issues, it was always due to a hardware problem that later revealed itself...be it a failing hard drive, or a dying cpu fan causing minor overheating that got progressively worse, or iffy ram. Always worked right after the hardware issue was addressed, too.
"Robust" I always thought meant crash proof.
Linux is about as crash proof as you can get in an OS
I don't do presentations, just high end CAD (BRL-CAD, Vari-Cad) and 3-D rendering.
Exactly. For work, you need Linux. For play, it's OSX.
Robust as in Substance. Crash proof different... It is like the difference between an Accura and a BMW. The Accura will run for ever but the BMW feels thick.

I've given presentations using both KPresenter and OpenOffice.org's Presenter. Unless you desperately need to make your presentation into a cartoon they both are at least as good as PowerPoint.
But if turning your presentation into a cartoon is what you really want, the GIMP works wonderfully. And both KPresenter and OO.o Presenter both support importing EPS files from the GIMP.
Now if you are serious about building a quality presentation...

People who don't know anything about Linux software should refrain from commenting on it.
Who needs to make things up? Microsoft has done more than enough stupid and unethical things to warrant the abuse that gets heaped on them.

My link was from my bookmark for MagicPoint tricks which unfortunately has a bad link for the MagicPoint main site.
Another option is to simply use LaTeX and use the beamer class to output to pdf or dvi.
