Low danger from possible attack on US nuclear plant: study

The danger to the US public of a September 11-like terrorist attack on a nuclear power plant is low, an official government study said.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a report that its extensive analyses showed that if attackers like those on September 11, 2001 flew a large aircraft into an American nuclear plant, "the likelihood of both damaging the reactor core and releasing radioactivity that could affect the public health and safety is low."

"Even in the unlikely event of a radiological release due to terrorist use of a large aircraft, there would be time to implement mitigating actions," the commission said.

The NRC made the statement as part of its argument that there was no need to tighten overall rules related to fire risk mitigation in the design and structure of the plants.

It said it had already ordered all plant operators to take whatever measures necessary to contain the effects of fire resulting from explosions in a possible attack.

Well, "date of entry" to THIS escapade is tanatamount to "truth" to you then...and ALSO allows you to be abusive in your comments.

I see....

very "free" of the republc.

For the innocent bystanders...this "exert" "olbie" snot nose hasn't answered a SINGLE question posed to him and is WISE to discontinue calling me names.

I presume THAT is the "agenda" hereabouts...am I correct...???

I posted PLENTY of factual data AND the "source". I have no apologies to make for informing people.

The replies...???

All demeaning doggerel from someone who REFUSES to state their level of involvement/expertise....EXCEPT to being "one of the regulars".

I will now CEASE telling the truth.

Seems to me I heard a line in one of Jack's movies about That.

Hmmm...???

Hey, super, another know-it-all newbie who showed up on FR looking for a fight. That's just what we need here. Why can't you nutballs think of some other hobby?

Lucky you, while in college I worked out of Butte and Phillipsburg (and on the edge of the Pintler Wilderness Area) looking for copper ore. The area is pretty , but too cold for me - Alaska is just warm enough here to allow me to survive the winters...

Enjoy the fishing at Flathead Lake, we always did pretty good.

Serves me right for trying to help an argumentative know it all. When it comes to posting on FR, you have demostrated your lack of knowledge.

I really don't understand you post. Who is super. Did you really intend to call me a nutball? I thought we all agreed that it was a misunderstanding.

Nevermind. I never argued with you. I don't know what your problem is other than you fired off without taking the time to think. I admitted that that was easy to do as I have done it myself, also. I said I had no argument with you but you persist in lecturing. Don't you know what good manners are?

I wonder how many millions of dollars were spent on this stupid study. Many on FR included myself were maintaining this position four years ago and it is well documented. The containment buildings are much more sturdily constructed than needed to withstand an aircraft direct hit.

A seemingly stupid study. However, the NRC lives and breathes by documentation. And with numerous applications for new plants coming, this effectively thwarts the anti-nuke argument about terrorist safety.

I found your home page interesting. The first line:

"It is entirely likely that you missed the sarcasm in whatever it was that I said that you found so offensive. "

I agree. Peace?

My problem is that the last time I came across you you were posting nihilist pothead psychobabble on another thread. Thus far, I'm not exactly glad to see you join our little group. Maybe that'll change, but I'm not exactly glad to see you thus far.

There are some of us that have had to work for some hours implementing findings from this "stupid study". Of course those details are not available to anyone without a need to know. But if one tries to drive onto the plant, he will find out in a hurry!

On THIS thread, please indicate what I have posted (other than my sarcasm related to the trolls) that has not benefited the thread. Thank you.

I don't think so. But that is for the other threads. Ping me on one of them and I will see what you are referring to.

Honestly, until you get over yourself, I don't see much point in continuing any conversation with you. Maybe after you've been here a while you'll grow up a bit. But I hold my optimism on that one for the time being.

Optimistic people should stay away from nuclear power, it's a job suitable only for extreme pessimists. The math behind nuclear safety can't accurately model terrorists working on the inside.

Oh, so now I'm an "extreme pessimist"? Who knew? And WTF exactly does that statement mean, anyway?

Oh, and as far as "terrorists" on the inside...well, ya got me there. I guess all those guys running around my plant with M-4's and all sorts of other neato stuff are just there for show.

The navy had three prototypes

Yes and no. They had three SITES. Idaho alone had three reactors--A1W, S1W, and S5G (my hell away from home). Then throw in S8G, S1C, MARF, etc., etc., and then the floatotypes down in SC.

And yes, there was a PSD facility in Idaho Falls. Not a base per se, but the Navy was in fact there.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the best post of the thread thus far. Well said, kidd. And very true.
