The Hubble Space Telescope is once more having trouble with its primary camera, NASA officials said Monday.
Problems related to Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys apparently sent the space telescope into safe mode over the weekend, according to reports from NASA officials and the Space Telescope Science Institute, which operates the observatory for NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
The telescope has since been recovered from safe mode and an investigation is under way, NASA said. Hubble should resume science activities with its remaining instruments later this week, the agency said.
“It is too early to know what influences the ACS anomaly may have on Hubble Space Telescope Servicing Mission-4 planning,” Preston Burch, associate director and program manager for the Hubble Space Telescope, said in the statement. "It is important that the review board conduct a thorough investigation that will allow us to determine if there are any changes needed in the new instruments that will be installed on the upcoming servicing mission so that we can be sure of maximizing the telescope's scientific output."
A teleconference on the latest glitch was set for 3 p.m. ET Monday.
Launched in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has been billed by NASA and scientists alike as one of the most valuable astronomical instruments of all time.
In 2006, Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys shut down twice, first in June then again in September, though both glitches were later resolved.
In October, NASA agreed to launch one last space shuttle servicing mission to Hubble – the telescope’s fifth orbital overhaul – to perform much needed maintenance and add new instruments. That final servicing mission is set to fly in 2008.

I think they have a early to mid 2008 Hubble refurb mission, last one scheduled in perpetuity in all likelihood,, may as well maximize its capabilities as much and for as long as possible...

You're close. My guess is they ground Hubble's mirror to the same specifications as they did for all Keyhole mirrors. Only problem is, Keyhole mirrors are ground to focus on the Earth about 250 miles away, while Hubble was supposed to focus at infinity.
