John Mangum was born in 1870. He married twice and raised 2 families.
His first wife was Maria Lewis. Among their children was Travis Mangum who was born about 1899. Travis married EuVa Lee Green. Eventually, they settled in Statesville and had 2 children

Gwendolyn Mangum Johnson, 63, of Philadelphia, Pa., entered eternal rest on Oct. 29, 1999. She was the daughter of the late T.V. Mangum and Euver L. Mangum of Statesville, N.C. A graduate of North Carolina Central College (now University), where she was soloist with the college choir from her freshman year. She received a teaching certificate from Livingston College in Salisbury, N.C. and taught at Morningside High School for several years before moving to New York City where she ventured into social work, and worked also in Philadelphia before retiring. Cherishing her memories are her husband, George C. Johnson; her son, Audwin L. Thomas and his wife, Sandra R. Thomas; three granddaughters, Farrol S. Thomas, Gwendolyn F. Thomas and Audwina L. Thomas; her brother, Charles M.L. Mangum, publisher of the Piedmont Area Journal newspaper, Lynchburg. Services are scheduled for Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Mt. Olive Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, 2039 W. Toronto, Philadelphia, Pa. Professional services are entrusted to the Wescott Funeral Home, 101-03 W. Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. Charles M.L. Mangum, a Lynchburg lawyer, is the new president of the Virginia State Conference NAACP.
Mangum, 52, was elected at the 51st annual convention of the state National Association for the Advancement of Colored People this weekend. He succeeds James E. Ghee, a Farmville lawyer.
Mangum said he plans to "take the ball and run with it by improving on the concepts in which the NAACP was founded."
Enhancing black businesses, the preservation of black colleges and helping the poor and infirm will continue to be priorities of the state NAACP, Mangum said.
He also envisions a closer working relationship among the NAACP, black churches and black fraternal groups.
Mangum said he has been a member of the NAACP all his life. A native of Statesville, N.C., his father, Travis Van Mangum, formed the Statesville branch of the organization in 1927, 17 years after the national organization was founded.

Ben Chavis was a leader in the riots that occurred after the murder in Oxford. He was in his early 20's at the time. He went on to lead the riots in Wilmington NC and was jailed as part of the Wilmington 10.

Sorry for the typo, but oddly I pinged someone with that name? I can not say I remember ever seeing that signon before.
Yep, I don't see how any case can go forward in Durham with him running the office?
The defense lawyers would have to argue that this office is under investigation for hiding evidence and other ethics charges in any jury case, wouldn't they. That would be no matter who from Nifong's office actually handles the prosecution. It would be legal malpractice not to make that argument. And I do not see how a judge could keep that information from a jury?

Miss Lisa Annette Gooch, 29, of 617 Bernice Street, passed Thursday, November 27, 1997, at Duke Hospital. She was born in Durham, daughter of Mrs. Louise Cheek Gooch and the late Tony E. Gooch. She was a 1987 graduate of Durham High School and a former employee of Kerr Drugs, Lakewood Shopping Center. She was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and attended Gethsemane Baptist Church.
Graveside rites will be held Saturday, November 29, 1997, at 1:00 at Beechwood Cemetery, Rev. V.E. Browne, Pastor, Gethsemane Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.
Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Louise Cheek Gooch, of the home; her grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Cheek, of Durham; 9 aunts, Mrs. Bettie C. Brame, Mrs. Mary C. "Left-wing blogger Amanda Marcotte of the vociferously anti-war web site Pandagon has been named by the John Edwards campaign as their new blogmaster," reports the Blogger News Network:
The extent of Ms. Marcotte's responsibilities at the Edwards site, and the nature of the political operations she will be undertaking as a member of the Edwards campaign, have not yet been detailed publicly.
Here is a Marcotte blog entry from just last week:
Naturally, my flight out of Atlanta has been delayed. Let's hope it takes off when they say it will so I don't miss my connecting flight home.
In the meantime, I've been sort of casually listening to CNN blaring throughout the waiting area and good [obscene progressive participle] god is that channel pure evil. For awhile, I had to listen to how the poor dear lacrosse players at Duke are being persecuted just because they held someone down and [obscene past-tense verb] her against her will--not rape, of course, because the charges have been thrown out. Can't a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it? So unfair.
At the very least, this is potentially libelous, given that the lacrosse players--although still charged with sexual assault (but not rape)--haven't actually been convicted of anything. It is also, shall we say, rather intemperate in tone, and one wonders if Edwards knew just what kind of blogger he was hiring here.
