Young adults leave New England

New England is losing young adults at an alarming rate, according to a recently published report from the University of New Hampshire's Carsey Institute.

The study found that each state in New England has experienced at least a 20 percent decline in its population of 25-34- year-olds between 1990 and 2004.

Massachusetts is at the low end of the spectrum and has lost 20 percent of its young adults. Rhode Island has lost the same proportion, while Vermont and New Hampshire have lost 27, Maine 29, and Connecticut 30 percent during the period.

"The decline of the young adult population in New England has significant implications for the future labor force, economy and character in the region," according to the study.

University of New Hampshire Professor Ross Gittell, who authored the report, said the region is becoming less attractive to young people, including those in the Greater Boston area.

"I think there's a lot of evidence that limited housing availability and affordability is a strong factor for why young college grads don't choose to remain here," Gittell told the Daily.

"Boston doesn't promote itself and market itself to young people as much as other areas," Gittell said.

These other areas, which include North Carolina and Colorado, have been able to attract young adults.

With bolstered social offerings, Colorado has experienced a 17 percent growth in its young adult population and North Carolina has seen a nine percent expansion.

To see similar improvement in New England, several overlooked New England cities "need to think of more cultural amenities, such as music and clubs, to make themselves more attractive," Gittel said.

A prevailing perception of New England's urban environment as being inhospitable to young people parallels a similar trend of Boston job markets appealing predominantly to "high end, accomplished professionals".....

Young adults are leaving DEMOCRAT states, not because it's New England.

oh no! A bunch of liberal idiots are moving all over the place. This is like hearing the rat population of the nearby town is dropping. :(

They should stay where they are and harvest the sweet fruits of their big government ways.

Yeah, this will solve the problem. How about admitting that liberal policies are a total failure? This article could have been written about almost any of the northeastern states, a region of the country headed for a major collapse.

Massachusetts has been losing population. They started offering Military members who have been deployed lump sums ($500 - $1000, I don't remember the specific amount). I've told some young Airmen to read the fine print before they take it. I am worried they may end up liable for taxes even if they don't live in the state.

When was the last time a government didn't include a hook in the bait...

Limited housing my ass, beyond "good ole boy" nepotism jobs in government, medical and education, there's less and less opportunities for people to make a decent living equal to the tax and housing cost structure that's in place in the northeast states to hang around !!!

And this is news? A good protion of the people I graduated in 1979 with, left Long Island for many reasons and never came back.

They say New England cities lack marketing. I commuted with a bank executive for years. Just before his retirement he died of a heart attack running for a train. Exactly how should working oneself to death be marketed properly?

Cambrdge MA was a fine place to live while working in academia. When it came time to live off of investments and start my own business, it was time to run like hll from there and find a redder state to live in.

They should stay where they are and harvest the sweet fruits of their big government ways.

They are leftist missionaries to the uninitiated (untainted) in the other parts of the country. Like Muslims, they don't adapt, they proselytize and try to change others.

The most important reason there are fewer young adults in New England is that it's a child-hostile place. The birth rate in liberal states is well below replacement.

Generally, the hardcore liberals I've met wouldn't dare intentionally tread into 'unenlightened' territory.

I left Long Island because of 'limited housing availability and affordability"

In English, a house that has $7000 yearly taxes (a nice average figure on LI) is just not worth it compared to a house in the South with taxes of maybe $1500.

They can put in all the clubs and marketing they want, but in order to give out their ridiculous entitlements and pay their unions the NE states have developed monster property taxes and people just can't pay them.

The only problem is, the uneducated that move here "for the taxes' are flabbergasted when they don't get their perks, and start voting social stuff as soon as they get here. It's amazing to me that people never seem to see the relationship between taxes and services, and don't understand how inefficient and wasteful the government is with our money.

Or maybe they want to get away from the socialist states.

That's what's scares me - - that these young adults are taking their parents' Democrat voting habits with them and fouling other states the way their parents fouled the states they're running from.

Colorado? Did I hear someone say Colorado? I live here and housing is affordable and costs are bearable.

That's just so silly.

Thinking that everyone who lives in New England is a liberal because the voting majorities in those states vote liberal often enough is childishly illogical.
