Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.
[...snip]
Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.
[...snip]
He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.
Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.
In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.
On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

Oh, this is rich.
McCain had cancer. It disqualifies him. Rudy had cancer. It doesn't.
McCain has mental problems and it disqualifies him. Rudy had to drop out of the 2000 NY Senate race because of personal problems but he's not disqualified.
Talk about double standards.
BOTH are not worthy by your own damn standards, but you don't see the problems with YOUR guy.
After all, he has the WOW factor. Who cares about anything else?
How many other candidates have books listed at the Reagan Library? You are splitting hairs and you know it! I thought liberals spun the best but you know what -- you unappeasables put the liberals to shame on splitting hairs and spinning.
Rudy dropped out because he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. He has since been given a clean bill of health.
McInsane's malignant melanoma has recurred several times and he is not willing to release his medical records as to the severity of the cancer.
It is called the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award. You claimed, and I quote: "Giuliani received the Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan." This was clearly meant to cause readers to believe that Giuliani received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Giuliani received no "Medal of Freedom" but instead an award from the museum foundation called the "Freedom Award"
Other recipients of the award include King Hussein I of Jordan, Bob Hope, and President Mikhail Gorbachev. Are they Presidential material too?
Look, you got busted. Give it a rest.
McCain is 70 years old and his cancer has come back several times. Apples and oranges but then you knew that too!
No. But Rudy was in Reagan's administration, the others weren't. DUH.
Rudy's could come back as well.
Double standard.
Duncan Hunter = Zero executive experience.
Duncan Hunter = Zero legislative accomplishments.
This has to be one of the most pathetic threads in the history of Free Republic.
You are reduced to saying that having a book at the Reagan Library is a sure sign your guy is a conservative. Forget everything else he's done. HE HAS A BOOK AT THE REAGAN LIBRARY. Never mind that on other occasions the Rudy-boosters have trashed Reagan's legacy. HE HAS A BOOK AT THE REAGAN LIBRARY.
Lie. Hunter was instrumental, for example, in getting the legislation for the wall.
I guess if your guy isn't a conservative, you have to lie about the ones who are.
Pathetic. It's the only word that applies here.
I trust him less than I do Giuliani.
Well, there is the KLUTZ Paper Airplane Guy. I've been in talks with his exploratory committee. He seems qualified and has agreed that I can be his running mate. He's going to run on his special place in Ronald Reagan's Presidential Archives and I'm going to run on the super special award that Ronald Reagan personally gave me. We know that Peach will be there to support us, based upon our qualifications and all.
Still waiting for a list of Duncan Hunter's legislative accomplishments...
Can you come up with at least 3 bills that that Duncan Hunter sponsored and pushed through the House?
Giuliani doesn't even have a book at the Reagan Libary. It certainly isn't part of the archives or anything. He has a book listed on the museum's ONLINE GIFT SHOP right along with the Klutz Paper Airplane Book. Pathetic, isn't it?
This really is. They trash Reagan when it suits their agenda, but having your book sold at the freaking museum gift shop is a major conservative coup and is indicative of Reagan's deep love and admiration.
Of course the book was published in October 2002, eight years after Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimers or that the Freedom Award was also given in 2002. Absolutely pathetic.
Did you know that Rudy is NOT a social conservative?
Gee, maybe that's the problem here.
What problem?
I dunno, maybe the fact that if Rudy is nominated, he'll split the GOP?
Minor quibble.
But who cares - he has a BOOK AT THE REAGAN LIBRARY GIFT SHOP!
