WASHINGTON -- Conservative Republican Mike Huckabee, seeking to repeat the success of another former governor from Hope, Ark., said Sunday he is taking the first step in what he acknowledged is an underdog bid for the White House in 2008.
Huckabee, who left office Jan. 9 after serving 10 1/2 years as governor of a Democratic-leaning state, faces steep odds in a crowded GOP field that includes well-known and well-funded hopefuls such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

While Arkansas is a predominantly Democratic state, Huckabee won two full terms in landslides. He championed tax increases for public schools, expanded state insurance programs for the children of the working poor and opposed banning state services for illegal immigrants. This is conservative? This is pure RINOism.

Thank you Mr. Huckabee for diluting the RINO pool.

Rinoism disgusts me, but we may have to come to grips with the reality that this field of republicans is the most conservative it will ever look for a presidential election.
The left, even when out of power, has been able to pull us leftward.
You know the old saying....todays republicans are yesterdays democrats and todays democrats are socialists.

I've only heard Huckabee talk once, on some radio show, but I was impressed. We'll see...

Huckabee is indeed an impressive speaker. He has this wonderful way of sounding more liberal then Democrats, while reminding us belatedly that he's "actually" a conservative.

I.e., has he always, from birth, been pro-life. If so, we can forget that he's a socialist, tax-raising, nanny stater.

Good buy, but he doesn't have a chance at winning the nomination, much less the general.

Thanks. I'd still like to hear Zarf explain himself and his choice of terms.

That's fine - we already have the heir to Reagan in the race, so the more big government liberals who enter the better.

I've heard Huckabee is very weak on border security and illegal immigration.
