Someone may have already made this point ... in WWII during the first days of the Battle of the Bulge English speaking German soldiers dressed in American uniforms, driving captured U.S. vehicles, were very effective in disrupting American counter measures. Once the GI's determined what was happening they quickly captured, or killed the Germans. The captured Germans were given quick military trials and shot. Can you imagine if that measure were implemented against terrorists in Iraq today?

Congress and the media would have a collective heart attack.

The US Marines in World War II in the Pacific learned exactly how to handle this type of enemy...it is time we took off the gloves entirely and handled these enemies in exactly the same way.

We have spent hundreds of billions - perhaps even a few trillion on military technology, training, R+D of all types throughout the last few decades. Unfortunately, we now have leaders who lack the stones to use our earned might. The plan now apparently involves depleting the enemy's IED supply with the bottoms of Humvees filled with 18-20 year olds.

I too would approve of a significantly more aggressive campaign. I can't see how you could ever declare victory with the way this war is currently being managed.

It is still kind of the same thing, we have won the war, and freed the people, now we are having to protect the people from the bad guys.

Our desire is to change the Middle East.

"Our desire is to change the middle east"

Our desire is defeat an enemy that wants us dead. Their home nest is the middle nest. Iraq is right in the middle of their home ground and is why if we succeed there then their end is hastened.

Picking up on last night's conversation, I read a little snippet this morning in the press that mentioned, just in passing, that the American vehicles at the base were destroyed as the attackers left. In other words, making any pursuit by any remaining Americans impossible. I don't know how many Americans were there in the first place or if any were left alive to pursue the attackers.

It was clearly apparent that the Iraqi police were not going to pursue them, or, I suppose, giving the police the benefit of the doubt, might not even have known what was going on. What puzzles me enormously about this is that it was not simply an attack to kill (which they could have done without ever getting out of their cars), but obviously to get someone or something.

It doesn't seem as if they got whoever or whatever it was, but they sure didn't want any witnesses who might be able to reveal what they'd been looking for. I hope this enables the US authorities to trace the information (or possibly disinformation) they were using back to its source and find where it came from. I think our entire operation there is probably enormously riddled with leaks, as a result of this policy of prematurely trusting the Iraqis.

I know all sorts of posters will pop up on this thread to tell me that the Iraqis are lovely people, and I'm sure that's true; but I think we seriously underestimated the length of time it would take to build a core of Iraqis who were loyal to the new way of doing things and could safely be let into our confidence. And this goes all the way to the top.

None of the American or Iraqi officials would allow use of their names because of the sensitive nature of the information.

So in other words we have NO idea if these people really exist or if this is more BS propaganda put out by local Iraqi Stringers hired by AP. You know, like the AP employee arrested late last year helping the terrorists make IEDs?

Your statement presumes that there is some length of time which, if we wait (and take casualties) that long, will allow the "Iraqis" to assume the role which the administration desires for them.

What is the evidence that this is true?

Yes, this is why I object so strongly to the use of the poll-tested phrase "islamofascist".

These enemies are exactly like the Japs, or even to some degree like some of the more violent Indian tribes.

They will respond to flamethrowers, napalm, and the threat of cultural or even physical extermination, and that's about it.

None whatsoever, except perhaps if we had ruled with an iron hand from the start, they wouldn't dare do otherwise. But it's too late to take back that advantage.

I think what we are hoping for now is the gradual attrition of our enemies or their increasing control by these mysterious sheiks and "leaders" who decide, at one moment or another, to ally with us. But how many of our people will have to die while this happens?

If this is still going on in 2008, the Democrats will have 65 Senators and 300 Members of Congress, so I give it about eight more months before the evacuation.

I don't think there will be an evacuation. It sounds to me as if Bush has finally decided to really fight this war. But we shall see.
