"Based on that measure, he said, nine of the top 10 states with 'the best outcomes for children today' are the Democratic voting blue states of Wisconsin, New Jersey, Washington, Minnesota, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire, with Iowa being the sole red (or Republican voting) state in the group."

Vermont? I guess when a child gets raped for four years and the rapist only gets a month or so in jail, this results in "the best outcomes for children."

Give me a break.

I live less than 12 miles from Trenton, New Jersey which I am told has the highest ratio of homelessness in the country. To this horror show add violent crime, teenage pregnancy, drugs, and a failing educational system. I am sure this isn't happening because community 'leaders' are rounding up everyone on election day to vote Republican.

But a veritable children's paradise may be found in
"progressive" ol' blue-as-blue-can-be Chicago, IL...

Yet again, hysterically calling abortion "infanticide" when it is nothing of the sort...

This looks a lot like a priori social science that reaches conclusions first and looks for facts afterwards. The assumption is that the more governments spend the less problems you'll have.

But of course, the blue states are on the whole more populous. Consequently they have less of a sense of community and more problems of this sort. If public expenditures are required, the money spent goes further in the smaller states.

You'd need to compare states of the same size and similar demographics. Even there, though, it's by no means clear that the relationship they assume really exists, since the red state may have more non-governmental behavioral supports and constraints.

If Mr. Petit wants to be serious (which he doesn't) he could do a red county/blue county study. Lo, and behold, what are the chances he would find catastrophe for children in blue areas that have high illegitimacy/school dropout rates? (not that high illegitimacy/school dropout rates have a thing to do with bad outcomes for children /sarc).

Oh, except for those pesky abortion statistics. I believe those might be interpreted as putting "children at risk."

It takes time to travel over distances.

People who live in more populated areas have a better chance of living close to a hospital. Metropolitan areas usually provide the best medical specialists.

These seem like reasons that children might fare better, medically speaking, in red states.

The reason New Jersey ranks far higher than Wyoming is that outside of a few heavily urbanized areas, New Jersey is one of the two wealthiest states (per capita & family income) in the entire country. New Jersey also has one of the highest ranked education systems in the US. It also has some of the finest health care (hospitals) in the world.

New Jersey has other serious problems but the results of the study do not surprise me at all.

You were told wrong. San Francisco is estimated to have the highest percentage of homeless people compared to general population.

I worked in downtown Trenton for over 10 years it's not a paradise but I honestly can't remember ever seeing a homeless person. I am not saying they don't exist but if you think that Trenton leads the nation in this category, then you really need to travel a little more.

In Vermont you can get arrested for molesting little children and get out on probation or a very light sentence. Gee, that's really good for kids (NOT).

I know of many people who work in Trenton who due to fear never bother to drive off a main road. You worked for ten years in Trenton but never saw a homeless person? Have you ever been to the arena, the baseball stadium? How about the train station or the soup kitchen? Be very hard to miss these folks if you did. Seems like you need to do bit of traveling yourself.
