But several experimenters posters evidently left out the crucial step of wetting the sponge reading the article.
That looks more familiar.

I have nuked my sponges regularly for quite some time. I tried nuking the office dish scrubber the other day, starting with a 1-minute test, and one portion of it melted. I'm guessing there was something besides wet plastic in there. Since I was actually observing the test under a controlled situation, I was able to kill the power before it got ugly.

When I have a full dishwasher load, I add any sponges I used and my dishrag too. Cleans them beautifully. I also put in my toothbrush and holder at least once a month.

The washing machine works well, too. Add it to your whites so the bleach will disinfect it.
Boiling water will work (which is essentially what the microwave is doing...)

i like to put some clorox in my sink and soak the sponges in there and use that to disinfect the sink area as well.

Last, people should be careful when removing the sponge from the microwave as it will be hot."That's like Bill Engvall talking about the guy driving a car around for 45 minutes, gets out and grabs the tailpipe and says, "Darn, that's hot."
