California governor Arnold Schwarznegger has announced that January 29, 2007, has been declared Milton Friedman Day in the State of California.
The governor made the announcement on Monday, January 22, during his talk at a memorial service at Stanford University for the late renowned economist.
Friedman, who was awarded a Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences in 1976, died on November 16, 2006, at the age of 94.
Schwarznegger told those attending the tribute ceremony that he was inspired by Friedman and his ideas on the power of the free market while watching the television program Free to Choose in the early 1980s. Friedman and his wife, Rose Friedman, appeared in the PBS series discussing free-market economics.
Other organizations across the United States also are marking January 29, 2007, as Milton Friedman Day including the City of San Francisco, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, The Economist magazine, and the University of Chicago.
The University of Chicago will conduct a memorial in Friedmans honor on January 29.
Also, on January 29 at 10 p.m. EST, PBS will premiere The Power of Choice: The Life and Ideas of Milton Friedman, a documentary on the life and ideas of Friedman. The special was produced for PBS by Free to Choose Media. The company, which is also leading a drive to mark the day as Milton Friedman Day across America, urges educational institutions to participate in a Day of National Debate on Friedmans ideas.
PROCLAMATIONby theGovernor of the State of California WHEREAS, Milton Friedman was one of the most influential economists of the twentieth century; and
WHEREAS, Milton Friedman made so many contributions to economics and statistics that he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, National Medal of Science and the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize; and
WHEREAS, Milton Friedman helped restore our faith in the freedom of the individual to choose in every sense of the word political, economic and social and was devoted to the simple idea that we are responsible for our own lives, to live them as we see fit as long as it does not violate the liberty of others; and
WHEREAS, Milton Friedman shared his knowledge through many books and projects such as his television series Free to Choose, which greatly influenced me and millions of others about the way we view freedom; and
WHEREAS, Milton Friedman was a dear friend who provided trusted advice on my Council of Economic Advisors and shared wisdom and insight on issues of great importance; and
WHEREAS, Milton Friedman was a great man whose friendly and humble demeanor belied his enormous intellect and tremendous capacity to influence the world; and
WHEREAS, Milton Friedman has left us, but his spirit will always live on in our hearts and minds and in the hearts and minds of those everywhere who cherish freedom;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby join other cities, universities and research institutions across the nation in proclaiming January 29th, as Milton Friedman Day.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 19th day of January 2007.
Strange that a Governor who would declare "Milton Friedman Day" would do so within weeks of coming up with a loony socialist lite health care plan.
WHEREAS, I have turned my back on everthing Milton stood for;
chutzpah [(khoot-spuh, hoot-spuh)]
Yiddish term for courage bordering on arrogance, roughly equivalent to nerve (in the slang sense): It took a lot of chutzpah to make such a controversial statement.
I see you're as astounded by the nerve of that socialist liberal as the rest of us. I agree with your implied assertion that he should be ashamed of himself
"I see you're as astounded by the nerve of that socialist liberal as the rest of us. I agree with your implied assertion that he should be ashamed of himself"
Your conclusion is erroneous, as usual.
Arnold is not only not a socialist, he is not even a liberal, much as you would like to paint him so.
For the umpteenth time: he VETOED the Dem's socialist medicine bill. If it weren't for him, and Davis or Angelides had been governor's we would have a single payer health care right now.
and WHEREAS, I don't want to sleep on the couch and must suck up to my Kennedy wife who has more facial angles than an Egyptian pyramid.....
WHEREAS, the more liberal I act, the more pussified I look.....
WHEREAS.......
typo:
"Davis or Angelides had been governor"
I can see the usual crowd, instead of honoring Milton Friedman, chooses to slam Arnold, while ignoring all the socialist actions of the Democrats, many of which Arnold stopped.
I know, I know. He's a robot from the future. If you are going to let your imagination take over, you might as well have some fun.
Milton Friedman was a great economist, that doesn't mean he was right about his support of legalization of drugs.
I think Milton Friedman could have been better honored by not raising the minimum wage, not spending the state into bankruptcy, and not supporting government mandated health coverage paid for by tax increases.
I have already decided that the (reluctant) ballot I cast for Schwarzenegger last year is the vote I most regret and wish I could take back. Arnold's "honoring" of Friedman with words while dishonoring him with his policies just makes me sick.
Arnold is kind of like those left-wing idiots who wear Che Guevara T-shirts but don't have a clue as to what the man really believed.
"I have already decided that the (reluctant) ballot I cast for Schwarzenegger last year is the vote I most regret and wish I could take back. "
Yearning for Angelides?
LOL
Arnold announcing "Milton Friedman Day" would be like Adolf Hilter declaring "Jewish Pride Week"
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Chutzpah indeed!
