Lawmaker Wants Pup-Friendly Pubs
WKMG TV NEWS ^ | 1-23-2007

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A Washington state lawmaker thinks you should be able to have a drink with your best friend.

State Sen. Ken Jacobsen is introducing a bill that would allow Fido into pubs.

The brew pups would have to be leashed and well behaved.

The Seattle Democrat said he got the idea after sitting in a popular bar and seeing cold, shivering dogs forced to wait outside for their owners.

A public hearing on the dog-friendly bar bill is slated for later this month.

Here's another example of why all state legislatures should be part time only. They have too much time on their hands so they have to think up problems to "fix".

so the dog comes in and craps/pis*es on the floor..I'd rather smell cigarette smoke than dog crap...

In Germany, it is common for restraunts to allow dogs. Many of these same restraunts don't allow or frown upon young human children. The dogs are much better behaved, and usually sit under the table at their master's feet. Germans tend to let their children run around freely until about 5 or 6 when they clamp down on them.

"Another Legislator legislating."

No....the legislators already did their dirty work when they told pub owners their patrons couldn't bring their dogs. Seems to me this guy's trying to undo that legislation.

"I think it's wonderful to allow bar owners to actually RUN their own businesses as they see fit."

Bingo.

Like government setting businesses policies for them? I think that we could use a lot more fixing of long government fingers.

To reduce government interference with businesses?

I'm not sure if the guy wants to repeal existing regulations (good) or make a new one to make yet another of the bar owners' decisions for them (bad).

This is about as dumb as people who bring their dogs to crowded festivals where they get trampled.

I love dogs but there are people places and animal places.

With the exception of service animals of course...

It's Seattle. I'd suspect the legislation he is proposing would make the law read that the Pub owner MUST take in a dog if the owner so desires and not that the business owner has the choice to allow or disallow dogs. After all he got the idea from watching dogs shiver in the cold wet air of Seattle.

And of course cat owners will sue the city for similar legislation. Then hamster owners, box turtle fanciers, etc..

A lot of people are allergic to animals.

I used to take my chihuahua to the bar with me sometimes. I don't know who loved it more--the bartenders or the patrons. She got so much attention from people! I'd tuck her into my overalls and she'd just sit there with her front paws draped over the top flap, just hanging out, perfectly happy. Once in a while, the bartender would say "Stand her on the bar!" and then he'd giver her a highball glass of water to drink :)

The Thirsty Dog, in Federal Hill, for one. Good beer, good pizza, good service, and generally well behaved dogs. I'm sure I could dig up some others, but that one's fairly close to my location.

I dated a girl here who had a dog, and she'd manage to bring him in to a number of places. Being from California, I thought she was flat out crazy to ask, but a lot of the local, non-touristy pubs are apparently OK with it. Lots of people own dogs here instead of guns, for security reasons, and dogs seem to be welcome in more places here than they do elsewhere. The dog culture is also a big part of the local singles/social scene, too, which may explain some of the leeway.

At any rate, I'm in agreement with the posters who think it should be up to the owners, not the government.

Ditto. I like the idea (so long as it's the bar owner's option).

Was in Munich a few years ago. Was nice to see dogs quietly sitting by/under tables with their owners. Giggled over one that was coveting my bratwurst.

All too often I can't go out to eat/drink because the "no dogs" policy stifles that part of the trip. A few places allow them on the patio, and that works out very well - including to the enjoyment of other patrons.

Last year smoking was banned-totally. But I guess if you're allergic to dogs, you don't matter.

I like it! It is cool to go into a pub in Ireland or Britain where there are dogs. If the pub owner wants it, the State should not interfere.

Next, coffee shops should have the option to allow dogs.
