Sheepshead & some other fish are known to change their sex based, at least in part, upon age.
Some critters are known to switch sex, IIRC, based on environmental/population stresses.
What's the chance that this is a 'normal' response to fish in a marginal environment, that has started to tip slightly in favor of a sex change for them?

increased aquatic levels of natural and synthetic hormones, such as those in birth-control pills, which often aren't removed by wastewater treatment plants, Blazer said. Johns Hopkins received a three-year $525,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant to study pharmaceuticals and antiseptics in drinking water, sewage treatment plants and coastal waters in 2002.
They should soon be due to present an information return on that investment.

"Intersex fish possess both male and female characteristics. For example, some male fish have been found with immature eggs in their testes. "
The dream of all gay red sunfish? If it is suspected in the water Baltimore may become the next san francisco.

I do not worry nearly as much about the fish as about bureaucrats who investigate fish testicles.

The fish would probably feel more at home in San Francisco Bay. They would build a shrine for it and hold a parade.

I am absolutely disgusted by the PREJUDICES displayed by the posters on this topic. There is absolutely NO reason why "animals of an aquatic nature" should be VICTIMISED merely because they have CHOSEN a unique gender bias. I understand legislation is being prepared EVEN now to FORCE fisherpersons to include a "reasonable and equitable" proportion OF intersex fish amongst their catches, and that is a measure we would FULLY support.
We have applied to the ACLU and you CAN expect legal repercussions for YOUR actions!

That whole area is a disgusting mess. I read in another story today that half of the catfish in the Anacostia have funky tumors on them. I wouldn’t eat anything from the Chesapeake if my life depended on it.
