Is North Carolina Turning Blue?
News Observer ^ | 1/22/07

Posted on 01/22/2007 8:28:55 AM PST by areafiftyone

North Carolina may be regarded as a red state, but it is trending Democratic in congressional races, and not just because Democrat Heath Shuler defeated Republican incumbent Charles Taylor in November.

Tar Heel voters cast 53 percent of their total votes for Democrats in the 13 congressional districts in November, according to figures compiled by Hotline, a Washington-based political newsletter.

It would be easy to dismiss the strong Democratic showing as an aberration, but that is how the votes had been trending. In 2000, Democrats won only 44 percent of the vote. By 2004 that had risen to 48.9 percent, according to the Hotline.

But North Carolina still remains slightly more Republican that the rest of the nation. When all the congressional votes are added up nationally, Democrats carried 54 percent in 2006.

The Democrats hold a 7-6 advantage in North Carolina's delegation to the House.

North Carolina only elects Democrats when they campaign as conservatives. Just look at John Edwards.

My lib brother-in-law and his wife moved to N.C. a few years back because of a job transfer. They brought their politics with them, and it looks like they weren't alone.

When you look at all the Mexicans, Northerners, and take-care-of-me's that have migrated to NC, it's no wonder that Dems are taking over.

Larry Kissell ran as a moonbat and came very close to toppling Robin Hayes. Scary.

Too many Yankees, however in 2008 NC is still a lock for the Republican Presidential candidate.

A lot of this has to do with all the Yankees that are moving here from places like NY. They flee the conditions (high taxes, unemployment, business fleeing) that Democrat policies have caused, then turn around and vote the same way when they get down here. Similar to what transplanted Californians are doing in a half dozen states out west. I hope they'll enjoy the Southern socialist paradise they're helping to create, particularly in the cities.

I am one of those people who ran away from MA to NC.
I am always shocked when I talk to some of my new neighbors and they complain about the high taxes in NJ, NY and MA and then they vote to raise local taxes here.
They are morons.

Do not forget the power of the MS media. They have nationwide ability to change temperament, and work hand in hand with the devil. The Democrats and the media act 100% in coordination. The Republicans have people like Hagel and Snowe that derail and split and weaken our party. We are in fairly serious trouble here, the DemocRAT mafia is here to stay unless we can outsmart 'em.

More moronic analysis by the MSM...what they fail to understand is no state is RED or BLUE...it depends on the national popular vote trends....Would we say after 1984 that RI and MA were relaibly RED or after 1996 KY and TN were solid BLUE......this is an example of lazy journalism

When your major industries get gutted you become defensive re free market economics. It's a natural reaction.

A lot of NC jobs have been lost due to outsourcing to China.

Shuler ran as a pro-life protectionist. So, NC can be classified as a socially conservative, protectionist state.

I wouldn't be surprised.

Schumpeter said it would happen and he's been right up until now.

...well, actually he said that we (our society, not FReepers) would gradually all drift towards Socialism - bad as he thought that was.

Whatever happened to that theory that liberals were aborting or non-reproducing themselves out of existence?

While it is true some libs have moved in, the real problem is the people who have always voted dem, because their daddies adn granddaddies before them always voted dem. I know a bunch of them and they will not be swayed. If it was good enough for daddy and granddaddy it's good enough for them.
