What kind of plane is it?

Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it just looks like a big Tylenol.

It was Continental flight 1838, a 757-300. From Flight Aware, it looks like the plane diverted around the time it would have entered Mexican airspace. It didn't go very deep into Mexico.

Sometimes I forget how large South Texas is. Houston is 300 miles from the Mexican border.

A 757 can actually land itself with no pilots IF the auto pilot is turned on.

That is what I have heard.

Is that true? I have no clue.

Hmmmmm....

Working as a pilot for Continental must be dangerous to one's health.

At my previous job, my boss's husband was a pilot (a Captain) for Continental. One day, she dropped him off at the airport because he had a flight. A short time later, when he was in the passenger boarding area, keying in the security code to unlock the boarding ramp to his plane, he suddenly collapsed. He apparently had a massive heart attack, and was dead before he hit the ground. I suppose that if anything "good" could be said about this, it at least happened while he was still on the ground.

May God have mercy on these people's souls, and comfort those they leave behind.

I really wish we would have gotten some -300's before they shut the lines down.

Boeing developed it five to ten years too late. After Boeing got their CATIA system up to design the 777 and 737NG, they seem to have used it to develop all the derivatives of various models that had been proposed but not previously implemented. The 767-400 never got any orders other than from Continental and Delta. The 757-300 sold only just over 50 copies.

Somebody still needs to run the auto pilot, but the aircraft does have 3D autopilot with auto ILS capability and auto brakes.

Well, once this Delta stuff is over, there will be some interesting orders at US if it doesn't go thru.

They really need some 777's for Asia.

Maybe he ate the food.

I wish I had a good picture of a 757-300. I really need to get down to Houston one of these days.

And if there's a pilot available, with the otto pilot turned on, other things are possible...

Whatever can make it to Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Delta does go to Seoul and to HKG, but little prescence in Asia.

Taking over NW would be great, but their workers are militant unionists, and who the heck needs that?

If the DL deal doesn't go through, US will find some 777's and cancel their A350 orders, and add some Europe and Carribean flights out of PHX.

If the deal does go through, Charlotte will be shut down as a hub.

The 747-300 did not catch a big market either. And why should it have when the -400 was coming down the line?
