Militia fighters attacked a provincial headquarters in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, killing five American soldiers today, the U.S. military reported.

The statement said "an illegally armed militia group" attacked the building with grenades, small arms and "indirect fire," which usually means mortars or rockets.

"A meeting was taking place at the time of the attack to ensure the security of Shiite pilgrims participating in the Ashoura commemorations," said Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, deputy commander for Multi-National Division-Baghdad.

Brooks said the meeting was taking place in the Provincial Joint Coordination Center in Karbala when the attack occurred. Iraqi officials and security forces as well as U.S. troops were present, he said.

Every meeting place these vermin use, and every house they sleep within, should be burned down with flame throwers. Burn them alive. Kill them all.

They prey on the hearts of our service members. No one in their right minds would want to hurt an innocent civilian, woman or child. The emotional impact is enough to hold off,as the enemy waits.Seconds later, the good guy loses.Who the enemy is is open to fair game.It can be a lose lose situation. This last year has me hoping for a better one.For all of us.

Oh, agreed. Wretchard had a post at Belmont Club illustrating how each group of Sunni AQ insurgents were able to pretty much operate on their own using internet, cell phone, and a general idea of what to do.

Shi'a insurgents might be more heirachichal in nature, however.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I pray for our all our troops in Iraq, who are suffering casualites due to the official U.S. policy of extreme political correctness on the battlefield.

Thanks for the ping jmc1969.

May God be with and comfort the families and love ones of these fallen heros.

My gratitude to them that gave all for our protection and freedom.

May this seal the fate of Muktada Sadr without delay.

You just dont get it... they just have to kill 5 US soldiers a day to win this war, but the US can kill 300 of them a day and still loose...

Killing Sadr will make little difference

Killing Sadr will make a huge difference to a lot of us. The hog needs to be slaughtered without delay.

You don't think I don't know that?

As for the Medhi Army, if we really were killing 300 a day like we were in August 2004 when his militia was hold up in Najaf it would be over for them very soon. Capturing them given they know in a few weeks or months later they will get out isn't an effective enough deterrent. The best way to get the militia to go underground for a very long time is to kill its leadership and a large number of the middle men in the organization.

Or, you might get 1000+ deaths like what happened last year when insurgents managed to cause a stampede.

While killing Sadr it might be cathartic on a psychological level it would have no tactical or strategic benefit. War is not about emotional catharsis. It is about numbers. Sadr is a religious cheerleader and little else. Killing him would be tantamount to trying to defeat the Dallas Cowboys by killing the head cheerleader in the white short shorts. While it might provide psychological solace it does little to advance the ball.

The way to defeat the militias and insurgents it to get inside their social network with your own counter-militias and counterinsurgents. The way we are fighting the war now will never work. The enemy is deciding when and where to engage.
