Some of you are probably rusty. Others are too young to recall what life was like in Democratland before 1995. Now, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's majority well into its vaunted "100 hours," you are getting a refresher course. Call it the American Idyll.
It is a world in which facts always bow to feelings. What matters is not so much that you do good, but that you feel virtuous, or perhaps more to the point, are seen to be virtuous.
Consider the increase in the minimum wage Congress passed by a vote of 315-116 (more than 80 Republicans joined all of the Democrats in voting aye). The speeches were heartwarming. "With the passage of this crucial legislation, we will reward work, paying America's workers a decent wage so they may join in our nation's prosperity," declared Speaker Pelosi. Majority Leader Steny Hoyer chimed in that "You should not be relegated to poverty if you work hard and play by the rules." Rep. Bill Pascrell proclaimed that "The little guy is not going to be forgotten any longer."
Sounds great. The Democrats are back in power, and now the deserving working poor are finally going to be paid a living wage.
Except that it isn't true.

My kids worked as waiters in Texas. They were paid $2.13 an hour plus tips. Often kids work their arses off and get no tips. Min. wage SHOULD cover kids working in restaurants IF it is going to cover other jobs. My daughter would be driving home after working for HOURS at a restaurant in Austin and she would see beggars on the corner asking for handouts. She said no way should would work so hard for $2 an hour and give it to the lazy bums. That made her into a strong conservative. This was only a year ago.

One of those "beggars" called in on his cell phone from "his" corner and said he was making well over $1,000 per week. Since that day, I refuse to hand them anything.
Don't have any problem with less than 100%. Have issues with less that 50%. At that point the status quo starts slipping leftward...
You mean less than 50%, right? What happened the past six years was (and is) unacceptable. I voted for these GOP losers, mind you, but not happily. And let's stop promoting the fiction that conservatives didn't vote - we did, and that is becoming more and more clear with each study of the 2006 elections that is published.

Given the choice - would you rather support a candidate who agrees with 40% of your views, or allow a candidate to win who agrees with 5% of your views?

Yes, that's right, all it does is make it harder for our teenagers to get their first job.
Restaurant workers that receive cash tips are not subject to the minimum wage laws because they get a raise every time the restaurant raises its prices. That effect on their tip income is much more important than any change in their hourly wage.
This means their income varies depending on how busy the restaurant is, but on average their pay totals much more than minimum wage. They also typically do not report all of their tip income, so their after-tax income is even larger than their before-tax income would imply.
I know many waiters, waitresses and bartenders. Their average tips over a week work out to $12 - $14 an hour, but the tax difference due to under-reported tips makes it more like $15 - $18 an hour. Experienced food servers don't even pay attention to their hourly wage. One bartender I knew bragged his tips averaged $40 an hour. Do you think he cared whether his wage was $2, $4, or $6 ?
