A group of Methodist ministers has begun a national petition drive asking Southern Methodist University to remove itself from negotiations to get the George W. Bush presidential library.
"As United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate," reads the petition, which is posted online at ProtectSMU.org.
"Because SMU is owned by the United Methodist Church, the imposition of a George W. Bush library, museum and think tank at SMU will irreparably connect the denomination with this presidency,” said Rev. Andrew J. Weaver, a petition organizer in Brooklyn, N.Y. and 1978 graduate of SMU’s Perkins School of Theology. “Members of the UMC, therefore, should be able to express their opinion on this matter before a final decision is reached.”
Campus officials said that the petition organizers have a right to express their opinions, but they don’t believe the sentiment is widespread.
“It’s not the least bit surprising there would be views from some segment of the movement, as large as it is, that would not want to see the library, museum and institute come to SMU,” said Brad Cheves, a university vice president. “However, we continue to believe that a vast majority of the Methodist and the university community support SMU’s efforts.”

I would be interested to know if there are any private universities with a specific religios affiliation that have a presidential library, seems like most go to the larger public university of the state.
The problem for Bush is the two major public universities in Texas are already taken with his dad's at Texas A&M and UT with LBJ. I would think he could go with Texas Tech since it's west Texas sorta near Midland/Odessa where he lived for a while. I know they're Methodists though and his wife went to SMU so I understand that choice also.
I'm a methodist, but I haven't been to church since I was 14 and my parents quit making me go to Sunday School. Just imagine trying to tell all the little old ladies and school teachers that their church is run by a bunch of anti-American left-wing nut-jobs.
Mainstream Christian churches at their finest.

Texas Tech was one of the Universities that was considered for the Bush Library. I'm not sure why they didn't make the final three.
SMU needs to understand that the "leadership" of the UMC is totally out of sinc with the people in the pews. Mostly we ignore them, but once in awhile they really need slapping down. SMU will hear from me.
It's a shame to see ANY church inject itself into the political arena. And it's ruining our churches, imo, and turning people away.
People don't want their churches to get involved in politics; they have enough of that in the workplace and in the 24/7 news cycle.
The George and Laura Bush are Methodists. I would not be surprised in the least bit if, in 2009, they bolted for AMiA or the Anglican Network along with his parents.

The Methodist "deaconess" program - trains young women as dedicated church volunteers - uses training manuals that are right out of the 1960s/70s Marxist "liberation theology" textbooks.
As par for the course, the Dallas Morning News is giving far too much publicity to these liberal morons.
Every article they print regarding the libary has a big but (not like Hillary's but big)

If they cared about Dallas, they would be extolling the great advantage of having the library here, but noooooo.

My kids went to a Methodist school about 4 years ago...we had an unfortunate incident that I won't get into here (too involved) but it became clear that this particular church was lefty, lefty, lefty...and they lost many families and church members because of it....
At my husband's Episcopal church (Catholic lite)..they have a sign on one wall showing the growth of the church over the years with important historical markers (ie. WWII, Vietnam etc.)
Under the current Iraqi Freedom spot it says "invasion of Iraq" instead....
I think that that palce is a serpent's pit any way (for personal reasons) but that sign PISSED ME OFF...and so far, the hubby hasn't addressed it...it isn't my church so I just take deep breaths on the occasions I have to go there...ugggghhh
As I understand it, it's pretty much a done deal that it's going to SMU.

Episcopal churches. Yeah, around here it pretty much depends on the individual church. Mine is fairly liberal, but conservative enough that I'm not uncomfortable.
I don't think you speak for Southern Baptists.
UMHB in Belton TX is waiting for the call. They'll take it in a heartbeat, or less.
