The abandonment of George W. Bush
MSNBC ^ | 1/17/07 | Charlie Cook

Posted on 01/17/2007 3:14:39 PM PST by pissant

WASHINGTON - While it is not unprecedented for a president to be ostracized by Congress, abandoned by even most of his own party's members, it's still pretty rare.

It was a delegation of congressional Republicans who convinced Richard Nixon that his days were numbered and that it was time to step down.

Certainly Gerald Ford was not in a comparable situation after his pardon of Nixon, but many Republicans on Capitol Hill were still dismayed by the move, although Ford's decision to grant clemency to Nixon has been vindicated by history, and he was given his due at his recent funeral services.

(snip)

It is not far-fetched to see upwards of 60 or 65 senators and 250 House members voting for such a resolution. Under such a scenario, Bush would suffer a stunning repudiation on what has become his signature policy and, for better or worse, the legacy for his presidency.

"I will abandon any who abandon him on Iraq. We have to win, no matter what it takes."

You're right--me too. I expected the dems to cut and run. Woe be to the republicans who do it. The majority of American voters by age are the ones who remember the humiliation of Vietnam. The republican moderates who side with the dems can kiss their keisters goodbye come '08.

I've got problems with the president, but Charlie Cook is one of the slimiest snakes to ever crawl from under a rock.

He's a collectivist maggot who qualifies, for me, as a seditionist who should be given an inner tube and floated in the general direction of North Korea, where he can join his buddies.

And one reason I no longer vote. We are in that "netherland where it is too late to work within the system and too early to shoot the bas***ds. At the rate things are going though, we may enter the next stage sooner than I had ever imagined, but probably not in my "useful" lifetime...

Wishful thinking from our partisan media.

It was a delegation of congressional Republicans who convinced Richard Nixon that his days were numbered and that it was time to step down.

Though it is not the topic of the article, it is important to point out that Republicans (led by Barry Goldwater) went to Nixon and told him it was time to go. Democrats never do this, even when Clinton had been impeached by the House for perjury and obstruction. Indeed, as I recall they held a press conference for him and proclaimed Clinton the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I had great hopes for GWB. I did, and still do, support the war on terror in all it's theaters and hope we crush the islamofascists.

Having said that, however, IMHO GWB's legacy will be a legacy of destroying American culture and the sovereignty of the United States. For that, I cannot forgive.

His stance on Iraq and the WOT is the right one no matter what some Repubs in Congress say that are worried about reelection.

And this border case is Bush's fault? How often should the President of the US insert himself into such prosecutions? I'm all for him pardoning the guys, but to pretend that this prosecution is the President's doing is silly.

"I will abandon any who abandon him on Iraq. We have to win, no matter what it takes."

Even if victory, as redefined by the president in his state of the union address, has no meaning?

If by "win" you mean an actual victory, then you stand apart from our president - you've abandoned him just as surely as the congress has.

This is wishful thinking on the part of the media. The overwhelming majority of Republicans still stand with our President.

"...abandoned by even most of his own party's members,..."

If this is actually what happened, there are going to be a bunch of sad Republicals not too far down the road.

The MSM continuously mentions the word legacy

Yep...And that is about the furtherest thing from President Bush's mind, IMO.

You're saying Bush can do nothing about it? And isn't avoiding the issue?

This is looking more like a death wish by the left to take this republic to a parliamentary system.

This is the abandonment of GWB, AND our military, AND the War on Terror. For Congress to do this is treason, rotton bloody treason. It is EXACTLY what the enemy wants in this war being fought as much in the media as on the battlefield. bin Laden is on record predicting this.

If these traitors were serious about it, they would make a vote in executive session with NO PUBLICITY - total secrecy so the enemy would not get the propaganda victory - and confront the President. That is what a true patriot would do if they whole-heartedly believed in their position and their oath. But to do this publically is a political stunt and that makes it treason. Our military is abandoned, the enemy is emboldened, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Treason to do this in that manner. Damn them to Hell.

GWB does what he considers the right thing no matter what the opposition says. They cannot stand that so they attack his intelligence.

Not that he is not making mistakes but he follows his own mind not the media's.

I will not abandon President Bush. I will stand with him until the sun burns out.

Those that don't..... are Traitors, lib loons, MSM, dems, or turncoats. And in my view, they are all enemies to the USA.
