Political analyst Dick Morris used a baseball analogy out of season to summarize what he considers the bleak prospects for Republican victory in the 2008 presidential election.
"I think youll see one of the minor leaguers win it [the GOP nomination], Morris told Fox News Channel.
Morris thinks the leading Republican candidates Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are "too flawed to win the hearts and votes of conservatives in the early primaries.
"The top four candidates for the Republican nomination cant win, Morris said. "Rudy Giuliani, John McCain . . . Romney with all of the flip-flops on abortion and Newt Gingrich, who I dont think gets into it.
That leaves a cast of lesser-known Republicans in line for a surprise run toward the nomination.
"I think that the Republican nominee is going to be one of these minor leaguers: [Tom] Tancredo, [Mike] Huckabee, [Sam] Brownback, [Jim] Gilmore from Virginia, Duncan Hunter from California, Morris said. "Its like the pitching rotation is all going to be injured at the World Series and the Triple A pitching staff, one of them is going to pitch the opening game.
Morris suggests the GOP will face Hillary Clinton in "the big game, despite all of the buzz surrounding Sen. Barack Obama.
"Obama serves the function of keeping Al Gore out of the race, Morris said. "He just sucks up too much of the anti-Hillary vote, but he wont win.
Morris said Obamas showing in the primaries may boost Hillary to victory in the general election.
"Hillary will run a vigorous race against Obama, probably a nasty race, he said. "She defeats him, then reaches out to African-American voters and puts Obama on as vice president.
"I have said from the very beginning, Hillary is the Democratic nominee and she is the next president of the United States.
You take political stock in the "Guardian"?
"The allegations by David Kuo, the former deputy director of the White House office of faith-based initiatives, come at a devastating time, when the administration is counting on born-again Christians to vote in sufficient numbers to save the Republicans' hold on Congress in the November elections.
"In a book entitled "Tempting Faith: an Inside Story of Political Seduction", to be published on Monday, Mr Kuo portrays the Bush White House's commitment to evangelical causes as little more than a cynical facade designed to win votes."
I don't think the GOP failed on the contract. As I recall, they enacted 9 of 10 of the CWA provisions. The line item veto was kicked out in the SCOTUS. The GOP just got entrenched and lazy and fell into the ways of Foggy Bottom.
fter a while these guys (and gals) who are fawned over by lobbyists and others begin to believe they are very important and worthy of all that comes before them. One doesn't get into elective politics without a substantial ego, so it all fits together quite nicely.
As to Newt .. I realy admire the guy, but (again counting on memory) he not only dumped his first wife, but the second as well, in a rather unceremonious fashion. You just don't win the "women's vote" that way. My memory is that throughout the Clinton brouhaha in 98-99, he'd talk about "Marianne and I ... " while conducting an affair with a staffer in his office. You can check it out. I'd love nothing better than for my memory to be wrong.
Using Newt and spine in the same sentence is a disconnect. Otherwise, he would have stayed on as Speaker. He should exit the stage and concentrate on his writing, as he is a good writer.
Could it be that the public has gotten a good look at Hillary, and it likes what it see? Many think Hillary can bring them personal "help" from the U.S. governmenmt. I think most though just want their Bill back!
I don't think Mike Huckabee could carry Pulaski Co., AR, in a presidential race.
he didn't mention ron paul...
And now Allen is gone - unless he can stage a comback if and when John Warner retires.
I have genuine problems with people such as Rudy - but Hillary will GET US KILLED and there will be no "tomorrow".
Webb "I wanted to slug the President" has been chosen to refute Pres. Bush's State of the Union address. I can imagine what Jimbo will say. He is a true lowlife.
Ron Paul is an isolationist. I would not vote for him. PEriod.
I think people have had it with Arkansas!
Apparently I did - I was asking Mehlman to thank the President for all his pro life work and he shook my hand.
So we need to find someone that can unite the entire GOP and stop her. That cannot happen with a Giussolini or McCain.
Not true at all. I know Rep. Paul's stance on the issues of importance. And because of that he is the only candidate I would support for President. I would estimate I disagree with Rep. Paul on less than 5% of his stance on the issues whereas with the protectionists like Gilmore, Hunter, etc. (not to mention the other candidates like Giuliani, etc) I would agree with them on no more than 70% of the issues and in some cases less than 50% of the issues.
McCain is talking tough on terrorism and sending more troops - and Brownback is knocking that. Kudlow lit into Brownback for his not backing the President. I am keeping an open mind although until now I have disliked McCain.
Sorry Pal, but under your hideous scenario, presidential term limits will have been changed by the beast and her court long before 2016.
McCain is the man that helped give us the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform disaster, and he stood with the opposition in the Gang of 14 when they tried to broker control of the Supreme Court Justice appointees. McCain is a major league rat, with some heavy luggage. Not to mention his mental instability.
There would be any number of enemies that would see her out of office prior to that.
