Unfortunately, the way the situation is on Capitol Hill we are stuck with waiting for Putin to make the first overtly aggressive move, which in time could conceivably transpire in an ultra-rash move against Israel, and or the Persian Gulf region, if Putin mistakenly thought openly siding with allies Syria & Iran would be to his benefit.
Reflecting on the era of the the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, today's Putin-Ahmadinejad Pact will hopefully result in a similar stab in the back, as in evil attacking evil.
In terms of only Iran's case, as well as Syria's, the corrective plan is already in motion.

I understand your wish. But russian proverb says:"Do not dig the hol for otherone or you fall there first".
Accually the main misunderstaning of russian policy on ME is Israel. For Russia Israel isn't the holy cow. So in fight between Israel and muslims for Jerusalim Russia stays aside. She sells weponry to muslim because they ar epaying. If Israel wanted to buy russian wepon, Russia would sell them with pleasure.
Well, I know one thing, it seems Putin has turned Russia's Afghan mistake on it's ear..
