Fireman 'confronted bomber on Tube'

Dramatic film of a fireman confronting one of the alleged July 21 bombers on a Tube train as other passengers fled in panic was shown to a jury yesterday.

The CCTV footage showed Ramzi Mohammed, 25, wearing a rucksack and boarding the busy Northern Line Tube at Stockwell, south London. He turned his back towards a mother with a child in a pushchair before detonating his device. The detonator exploded, although the main charge, made up of liquid hydrogen peroxide and chapati flour, failed to go off.

As other passengers tried to run, Angus Campbell, an off-duty fireman, stayed and challenged Mohammed as the train continued to Oval station, Woolwich Crown Court heard. The grainy footage showed the pair in the carriage at 12.26pm. advertisement

"People fled in panic but Angus Campbell was made of sterner stuff. He remained and remonstrated with Mohammed," said Nigel Sweeney, QC, prosecuting in the trial of six men accused of plotting to bomb London's transport system two weeks after the 7/7 suicide attacks.

As Mr Campbell shouted at him, Mohammed allegedly tried to offer an excuse. "Mohammed said it was not a bomb, but rather 'what's the matter, it is bread, it wasn't me, it was that, pointing to the rucksack," said Mr Sweeney.

"He placed the rucksack on the floor of the carriage, no doubt the best he could do, being surprised to find himself alive."

As the doors opened at Oval, he fled, pursued by shouting, gesticulating passengers. The station florist joined the chase, the jury heard. Mohammed ran up the down escalator past London Underground staff who did not yet know what had happened and was last seen running along Kennington Park Road, the court heard.

The allegations emerged on the second day of the trial of Mohammed, of North Kensington, west London, Muktar Said Ibrahim, 28, of Stoke Newington, north London, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, 33, of no fixed address, Hussain Osman, 28, of no fixed address, Yassin Omar, 26, of New Southgate, north London and Adel Yahya, 24, of Tottenham, north London. The six African-born Muslims deny conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life.

Mohammed was the first of four men accused of failed attacks on the Tube and on a bus on that day. Carnage was only avoided because while the detonators went off, the hydrogen peroxide and chapati flour mixture, which was surrounded by nuts and blots, did not ignite, the court heard.

Footage of Mohammed, Ibrahim and Omar en route to Stockwell Tube station, each wearing a rucksack, was shown. Omar headed for the Victoria Line, the other two towards the Northern Line, the court heard. Osman and Asiedu were waiting to set off from west London, the court heard.

Mohammed, wearing a hooded top with the words New York across the chest, had a slit in the rucksack so the wires of his explosive device could pass unseen into his clothing, it was alleged.

Attack two

Omar boarded a Victoria Line train at Stockwell and, as the train passed Green Park, he asked a fellow passenger how to change for the Piccadilly Line. "An interesting question by him, given that the Piccadilly Line had been attacked 14 days before and was still suffering the after-effects of those events," said Mr Sweeney.

He detonated his alleged bomb as it approached Warren Street. Witnesses had said he was blown up in the air with the force and shouted out "in what appeared to be pain". "He staggered as he walked along the carriage after that," said Mr Sweeney.

As the doors opened and he fled, one witness saw a hole in the back of his T-shirt with two wires protruding. As he ran up the escalator and vaulted the gate, passengers fled in "terror and panic".

In Hampstead Road, he asked a woman to call him a taxi. She noticed he had dried peeling skin and white stains on his hands "no doubt from the peroxide," said Mr Sweeney.

He then approached two women in traditional Muslim dress and demanded of the younger one she take him to her house. "When she declined, he said words to the effect of 'what kind of Muslim are you not helping another Muslim?'" said Mr Sweeney. At a nearby cafe, he asked for water to clean himself, and again witnesses noticed the torn T-shirt.

He had become engaged just five days before, the court heard, during a ceremony at a mosque in Finchley.

The jury were also shown CCTV footage of a figure alleged to be Omar dressed from head to toe in a black burka and carrying a brown handbag walking to Golders Green coach station and getting off a bus hours later at Digbeth, Birmingham. He was arrested at a house in the city, standing in a bath fully clothed and wearing a rucksack.

Attack three

Osman went to Westbourne Park station and boarded a Hammersmith and City Line train. His rucksack also contained a club membership card, with an address and photograph and an envelope containing torn-up photographs of himself. "If you are expecting to die, it does not matter at all if you have in your rucksack pictures of yourself," said Mr Sweeney. If it was a hoax, then that would be "rather unwise".

As the train was between Latimer Road and Shepherd's Bush, the 16 passengers in his carriage heard a "loud bang". "Some passengers recall him being thrown off his feet and landing on the floor of the carriage still wearing his rucksack," Mr Sweeney said. A yellow foam-like substance spilled out as he discarded his alleged bomb.

He allegedly attempted to escape by squeezing himself between two carriages. Then he went out through the window, tried to climb on the train roof, jumped down and ran along the tracks before disappearing over a trackside wall. He scaled a fence and jumped into the back garden of a terrace house.

He ran through the house to the front door. The owner, a retired nurse, heard noises, said Mr Sweeney. "The man said 'I won't hurt you, I am just passing through' or words to that effect".

He was spotted on CCTV cameras heading past BBC Television Centre before catching a bus to Wandsworth.

Attack four

Ibrahim, the alleged bus bomber, travelled to Bank by Tube then boarded a double-decker Number 26 bus. CCTV footage showed him finding a seat on his own at the back, with only three or four other people on the upper deck. Shortly after 1pm, at the junction of Shoreditch High Street and Hackney Road, he detonated his device.

"You may remember that the 7/7 bomb was also upstairs," said Mr Sweeney. As the detonator went off, terrified passengers turned round to look before fleeing. Ibrahim was caught up in the ensuing panic and managed to escape.

Attack aborted

Asiedu, who is said to have lost his nerve at the last moment, dumped his rucksack in woodland at Little Wormwood Scrubs, and the battery device a short distance away, the court heard. Both were found by police two days later.

He went to the police several days later and pretended he was "innocently involved," said Mr Sweeney.

He lied "on an epic scale".

"Asiedu knew others had been to the police and no doubt mentioned him. He decided to go to police on July 26 and to try and keep up the pretence of happening to be innocently involved."

Mr Sweeney said the jury could safely conclude that Adel Yahya, who had left Britain six weeks before the failed bombings but who is accused of being involved in the preparations, was a "knowing conspirator who had long involvement in the plan".

Whether the 24-year-old originally intended to carry an explosive device or not he was "just as guilty as those who stayed in London and entered the public transport system in July". The trial continues.

I'm sure the lawyers will claim they are victims of the racist british society and many liberals at the BBC and in the UK will claim this as well.

Just watch. The liberals will claim they are acting out this rage because of the plight of the palestinians and american/british war mongering.

He yelled at the bomber and he's a hero?

As the doors opened at Oval, he fled, pursued by shouting, gesticulating passengers.

He'd have never lived to see that next stop in NYC.

I don't know. He would have been followed by a bunch of liberals running behind him yelling excuses for him.

"Don't try to stop him! Innocent until proven guilty! Alleged bomb! We don't understand their culture! Embrace our differences!"

It seems like the remaining suicide bombers are no longer the sharpest knives in the drawer.
