MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has delivered new anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran and will consider further requests by Tehran for defensive weapons, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Tuesday.

"We have supplied the modern short-range anti-aircraft systems TOR-M1 in accordance with our contracts," Ivanov told reporters. "Iran is not under sanctions and if it wants to buy defensive ... equipment for its armed forces then why not?"

Tor M1 can detect and track up to 48 targets (minimum radar cross section of 0.1 square meter) at a maximum range of 25 km, and engage two of them simultaneously, at a speed of up to 700 m/sec, and at a distance of 1 to 12 km. The system's high lethality (aircraft kill probability of 0.92-0.95) is maintained at altitude of 10 – 6,000 m'.

Our friends--the Russians.

Why not indeed.

I hope the Chechnyans take the whole bunch out.
Then they will see why not.

Worthless crap. The TOR system cannot reach our (and Israels) planes.

They can share in Iran's fate then. Iran's nutjob has openly stated his desire to see the destruction of Israel and the United States. Russia is openly stating this so they can share in the fate of what they are trying to do by proxy.

The performance on this thing are not competitive compared to a HARM equiped Wild Weasal. The main danger this thing poses is rapidly depleting our munitions and taxing the logistics chain.

Yep. We're "shooting and forgetting" from 25-30 miles out. A missle defense system with a 25km range isn't going to be very effective no matter how many targets it can track.

This is more than money.

Under Putin we have seen Russia move backwards when it comes to freedom of press and transparency. Power is once again being centralized. Russia began trying to reassert itself as the power and dominate its former republics that split away and they see themselves in direct opposition to the US. Russian KGB activities today resemble those of the Cold War completely. But then again, what can one expect from Putin, a former KGB agent.

A lot of what they are doing is more than just trying to make a buck. Some of their actions are for no other reason than to weaken our position, in the Caucasus, Europe, globally in fact. You see this in their state coordinated press releases, their strong arm tactics in some of their former republics where they are even attempting to sabotage the mission in Afghanistan. Russia is "no" friend.

The sale of SA15 to a nation like Iran has profound implications for helicopters and other slow movers like drones. It is significant!

I understand it is "Cash on the barrelhead". No credit!

The Russkies learned their lessons in Iraq! They lost over $3 Billions in military equipment.

Should I hope they got paid up front for worthless crap that won't do the Iranians any good (same as it did for the Iraqis in 2003), or should I hope they extended credit and get stiffed when the new Regime in Tehran says, "S---- you, we aren't paying for our predecessors mistakes!"

Decisions, decisions.

If Bush ever made that proposal and was serious about it, the Russians would roll over quick.

The SA-15 system is sophisticated enough to take out anti-radiation missiles such as HARM. It also doesn't require the use of radar to operate as it has optical guidance.

It's kind of sad to watch Iran waste its money on this kind of thing. They could be doing well economically.

I agree, and what some don't understand is that this is part of a much bigger IADS. The SA15 fills a niche and in it's role it's a capable system.
