A Zogby International survey reveals many Americans long for leadership qualities similar to the kind shown by former U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Survey respondents were offered thumbnail descriptions of the presidential qualities, including the names of five of the greatest American presidents: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan.
Respondents nationwide said Reagans qualities are most sought after, with FDR a very close second, according to Zogby. Twentyeight percent said they would prefer someone like Reagan, who displayed "far-sighted vision and who "persevered despite harsh criticism from enemies and was firm in pursuing his agenda.
Nearly as many (26%) said they preferred the "pragmatism and hopefulness of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who inspired a nation in trouble and championed the needs of the downtrodden.
Interestingly, Washington - the nation's first president - fared the worst among the top leaders detailed in the survey.
Just 6% said they think the United States now at war around the world for five years would be best served by a commander in chief such as Washington, the man who led the war for independence. A full 21% said they think this is a time for Democrat John F. Kennedy, while 16% reached back to Abraham Lincoln in search of a leader to solve todays modern problems.
Both women and men most favor a president like Reagan to deal with todays issues men somewhat more (32%) compared to 25% of women. FDR comes in as the second choice for men (28%) while 19% would turn to a president with JFKs qualities. Women gave equal support (23%) to Roosevelt and Kennedy as their second choice for a president with the qualities the nation most needs now.
The survey of 843 likely voters nationwide was conducted Jan. 5-9, 2007, and carries a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points.
Is this from last year or is that a typo?
"A full 21% said they think this is a time for Democrat John F. Kennedy"
What bad things it says about our population when people pick this guy over George Washington.
It's a typo. It's 42 degrees celcius here right now. A bit hard to concentrate...
Nice to see President Goober didn't bring up any fond memories.
You'd think by now the mainstream media would wise up to Zogby and all these pollster scammers.
They seem to be the only ones buying their polls and studies anymore. The rest aren't even buying the newspapers they're printed on.
FDR would be proud, we are descending into Euro-Socialism. Socialist Security, Medicaid, Medicare, NEA, prescription drugs, free college tuition...blah blah blah.
> As time passes, the greatness of Ronald Reagan will continue to be recognized.
You are *so* right, mate. I can remember the '80's very well. People back then used to laugh at Reagan, make jokes about how he was senile and not in control &tc ad nauseum. Everyone was doing it.
Now, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone to say anything against President Reagan.
In my opinion, he was one of America's greatest Presidents and belongs on Mt Rushmore.
All that said, GWB is doing a fine job. The survey probably didn't ask about him.
*DieHard*
It would be nice if we could get a way to get RID of terrorist supporting Zogbys!!
Is the same Zogby poll that found Hillary Clinton to be the most "Reagan-like" of all the candidates?
Ha!
They were all great communicators and had the ability to "frame the issues", something GWB and Cheney and the others simply don't have.
many Americans long for low tax rates,
The media were also on the side of the United States during FDR's war (although not so much so during Reagan's Administration--still President Reagan was a trained actor who knew how to handle them.)
My suspicion is that if Reagan or FDR were here, they would meet with the same Democratic intransigence that Bush has.
How many of those polled were too young for FDR (or even Reagan--children usually aren't much into politics)? Views of history change as that history gets older. A lot of those FDRers probably only based their decision second-hand (or more).
Summer in Oz. It's reached freezing temperatures over here--highly unusual.
At the moment I'd cheerfully swap you. It reached 44 degrees (Celcius) here today. That's just too hot...
So, is this where they made the deduction that Hillary best epitomized Reagan, FDR, etc.?
.......Special rights for special groups, the UN in charge of the world, from each according to his ability to each according to his needs.......
