Pelosi warns Bush shouldn't 'abuse power' on troop escalation
(01-15) 12:37 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, returning to her hometown of San Francisco, strongly warned today that President Bush "should not abuse his power" with regard to troop escalation in the Iraq war and said it is the duty of Congress to "exercise oversight over his power.''
"If the president doesn't have a plan, Democrats will hold him accountable," Pelosi said in her first public appearance outside Washington since her election as speaker Jan. 4.
Regarding Bush's decision to push ahead with an escalation of about 21,500 troops in Iraq, she said, "Congress also has its role, and neither of us should abuse our power.''
The speaker's remarks, before an enthusiastic audience of 1,000 at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast at the Hilton Hotel in San Francisco, came just one day after the president and Vice President Dick Cheney appeared on talk shows maintaining the administration would forge head with the troop escalation despite strong opposition from Democrats and some Republicans in Congress and in the face of overwhelming public sentiment against the plan.
Bush, appearing Sunday on "60 Minutes," was asked about the opposition of the Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress.
"I fully understand they could try to stop me,'' he said. "But I've made my decision, and we're going forward. I'm not going to try to be popular and change principles to do so."

Pretty funny, coming from the perpetually planless party.
So what's she gonna do, nag him?
Remember before the election when the Dimocrats were running around saying "We can do better?" Still all fin and no tuna.
Huh ? Wasn't that a "plan" he laid out in detail, with supporting documents ? Glad to hear san fran nan feels those without a plan should be held to account and I dearly hope it comes to pass.
"If the president doesn't have a plan, Democrats will hold him accountable,"
That's a pretty stupid comment because he obviously has a plan, send 21,500 more troops to Iraq.
However in an era of sound bytes and biased reporting, why not?
Well, here's another warning. Pelosi should not steal the public's money; but she will anyway.
Leaving aside, for now, the Chronicle's use of the word "escalation," which is freighted with Vietnam-era implications, it appears that what Speaker Pelosi really means is that President Bush should not use his power with regard to increasing troop strength in Iraq. ("Abuse" is a rather tendentious word in this context, to say the least.)
Mort Kondracke, on the Fox News All-Stars, tonight made an interesting (and somewhat related) point: In the recent past, President Bush has called for "staying the course"--in other words, keeping troop strength level--while the Democrats sought a gradual reduction in troops. Now that President Bush is calling for a "surge" of 20,000-plus troops, the Democrats want to keep things just as they are--President Bush's former position.
True, the Democrats would really like to see a total withdrawal (or "redeployment," to borrow the euphemism). But very few have the courage of their convictions. The bloodbath that would surely ensue--probably even worse than in post-1975 South Vietnam--would then be entirely their responsibility.
The Dems aren't into logic or facts. Just give the masses some bumper sticker phrases - "Bush lied", "Bush doesn't get it", "Bush has no plan" - and everyone's happy.
"Live with it. You got what you elected. So shut up and endure it."
And you can go back to the mojo mojave. I did not elect the bitch.
"Live with it. You got what you elected. So shut up and endure it."
Funny, that line sounds like advice given to someone being raped. BTW, many of us did NOT vote for the crap-heads that won the last election.
I was quoting RetiredArmy.
No, you elected her not me.
You are from California, thus a fool. I am finished with you Nancy.
"So, what's she going to do, nag him?"
You bet...and play the "Grandmother w Grandchildren Card".
What a clueless bitch she is !
(and I am on my best behavior, tonight.) *S*
