By the end of this year, the contents of all 1,800 courses taught at one of the world's most prestigious universities will be available online to anyone in the world, anywhere in the world. Learners won't have to register for the classes, and everyone is accepted.
The cost? It's all free of charge.
The OpenCourseWare movement, begun at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2002

Here we come a beavering

:-)
According to wikipedia it's the MIT class ring.

You cannot contact the faculty; you don't get a beaver ring, or a grade or a transcript Best find a way to get a degree so you can prove it to a prospective employer. If you don't need a job, you are on your own, as you already know.

This is a particularly interesting development in education. Now it's just going to be a matter of time before people begin to seriously question what precisely the University is charging them 200K for. They have senior researchers, but the classes are all taught by graduate students. They have facilities, but you can get access to similar facilities for a lot less.
For some reason they haven't realized that all they ever were was the vault guards for the information. Now that they've given that away for free there is no need for the guards.

I did take a video course on "Digital Signal Processing" given by Oppenheim (of MIT). It was OK. The 70's haircut was a little distracting.
Human being react differently to other human beings than to a video and a lecturer acts differently when being filmed.
Also, a good lecturer gets feedback and can tell when he's getting through and when he's not.
I had an absolutely horrible Calculus teacher in high school. The good thing was that he knew he was horrible. He mostly didn't show up. But he did bring in Super 8 movies of lessons prepared by the State University of New York on a couple of occasions. I remember impressing math majors with my thorough understanding of Rolle's theorem and the Mean Value Theorem. The films were *not* lectures, they were animated examples, illustrated by improbable but interesting "real life" examples. Pedagogically brilliant, imho.
