Huge rock below earth's crust may have caused catastrophe millions of years ago

A huge rock called a "megalith," which lies deep below the earth's crust, may have played a part in a global catastrophe that is believed to have occurred 40 to 50 million years ago, researchers said.

A megalith is supposed to have caused the sinking of the Japanese archipelago in the popular film, "Nihon Chinbotsu" ("The Sinking of Japan").

Researchers say a catastrophe on a greater scale than the sinking of Japan may have occurred 40 to 50 million years ago, noting that a megalith collapsed below the crust in Asia and plates were undergoing drastic changes on a global scale at the time.

In a joint project, researchers at the semi-governmental Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the University of Tokyo analyzed seismic waves and electromagnetic waves deep below the crust. They also used a supercomputer to simulate changes in plates and conducted experiments on rocks under high temperatures and pressure.

They found out that the shapes of megaliths in various parts of the world differ from each other. Megaliths are formed from a concentration of plates around 660 kilometers below the earth's crust.

As a result of a simulation of future changes in plates that have sunken deep, the researchers were successful in reproducing a phenomenon of a megalith falling into a lower mantle. Based on the results of the simulation, researchers have assumed that megaliths sink because they are colder and heavier than mantle surrounding them and the balance in gravity between the megaliths and the mantle is disrupted as a result.

Based on the findings, the researchers presumed that a huge rock about 2,900 kilometers below the crust in Asia was formed as a result of the collapse of a megalith 40 to 50 million years ago, judging from the speed at which the nearby plates sank.

At the time, plates dramatically changed on a global scale. The direction in which the Pacific plate was moving changed from north to west and the Indian and Australian plates became connected.

The changes in plates also coincided with a major geographical upheaval on a global scale. The Izu and Ogasawara islands were formed in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo, and volcanic activity started on these islands around that period.

In the film, which was released last year, a megalith below the Japanese archipelago is supposed to have collapsed, causing the plate below Japan to plunge and the entire archipelago to sink below the sea. (Mainichi)

Dont buy water front land.....

There are also some very interesting stone ruins in Southern Japan that are underwater.

WOW!!

That Desghidorah has the electrical voltage and kick of an Insecticutor! He lit up Mothra but good! I was also stunned at how Mothra's inner fuel sources continued to re-ignite and burn after he was dumped on the lawn! His flying ability sucks.

Ooh, nifty techniques. I hope they can learn a lot more about the mantle, especially the fundamental convection paths since those are what direct the plates. I'm surprised that they were able to locate megaliths 2900 km below the crust since the radius of the Earth is only 6371 km. This is an area I am not well versed in (even though I did study geophysics for 2 years), but it still intrigues me. Thanks for the story!

Interesting. Add continental sinking to continental drift.

What's causing it?

Global warming, of course. The hotter global mantle is causing the cold megalighs to fall:

"megaliths sink because they are colder and heavier than mantle surrounding them"

I think story-wise, he was the result of French nuclear testing. Originally an iguana, iirc.

Now the Blob came from meteor. But not a megalith.
